OTFORD'S HIDDEN GEM is this bistro/tea & cake shop hidden away behind the charity thrift shop. Both the thrift shop & the bistro are staffed by volunteers with all proceeds going towards hospices in areas where they are new. The cakes are mostly made on the premises or in the homes of the volunteers. Walk through the thrift shop & ask for a table, or a table outside in summer. If you're lactose intolerant try the fish or lamb curry & ask for marge, not butter, with the jacket potato it comes with.

We got there today, the place is just a bistro/cafe with no special decor other than charity promotion that they do support. No complaints here. The service is not bad and seems like it's done by volunteers. We got two coffees and two cakes. Coffee is good. Not bitter not sour, nice and mellow. The cakes, one Chocolate, orange and almond - Topping was so sweet that the chocolate flavour was barely noticeable and almond was something I guess you have to imagine. Tha courgettes and lime again sweet so much that some of the lime was barely coming through. What I would complain about was the portion. Two cakes one nice piece, the other just like half portion that was a bit dry and looked like it was just a leftover. I didn't want to argue but maybe I should as otherwise I would not take it of my chest here but got the right size piece of cake. If you serve one table with two slices of cake surely they should look of at least the same size. I definitely won't be returning as I value my money to much and over £15 for 2 coffees and 2 cakes isn't little for me .

To get to the cafe/restaurant, one has to walk through a charming charity shop. This is all in aid of a hospice, after all. Good stuff. However: On arriving at said cafe, there is a sign that states, "Wait To Be Seated." Naturally, my wife and I waited for young waitress behind counter to acknowledge us... nothing happened. So, I asked if we could sit anywhere, "Yes" was the reply. Now we were not told you had to order food and drink at the counter, after a while of nothing, I figured it out, only to be told the breakfast menu had stopped, order from the main menu. We did and then were told it would be a while as the kitchen was setting up. Okay, these things happen, we said to each other. Food came with no cutlery. I, of course, enquired and was told you have to go over here, sir, and help yourself. The menu stated a burger, but it didn't say without a bun, which I was fine with. The seven chips, see photo, on our plates was an insult, despite being chunky and a few salad leaves chucked on a plate, lacks imagination. I will say one thing, though: the lamb burger was delicious. Chef Demetri advises they brush up on their communication skills.

Lovely comfortable outdoor seating, dog friendly outside, and delicious food. Large and varied menu, with plenty of choices, including homemade cakes and scones.
