Visited Chester for the Christmas markets and popped in for some lunch when it started raining. Beautifully cooked fish and chips and much faster this time even though we could see you were very busy The 2 girls on shift (sarah and meg) were efficient and worked so well together. They kept us topped up with a little table service, all whilst making sure all the other tables were happy. Sarah came and had a little chat with us and we learnt that she was the manager. She spoke highly about her pub and her team. We can see all the little changes that have been implemented over the last few months are working well. We visit a couple of times a month and the pub has always been great. But I was particularly impressed with our entire visit this time. Sarah you are brilliant at what you do and have done for this pub.

Good atmosphere, reasonably priced drinks. Food looks (and smells) lovely. All credit to the management and staff, arranged for 2 of us to watch our home football team on one TV whilst there was a Premiership game being shown on all the others even though the pub was busy. Have paid a visit here on our last 3 stays in Chester, and have always had a good time and felt comfortable.

Went in the Red Lion 5.20pm on Saturday went to the bar to order food to be told they had no steak subs,so I then ordered a cheese burger to be told no burgers then the young girl behind the bar told me they had no pizzas no fish and chips so I eventually ordered ham egg and chips as a last resort .Waited 45 mins for the food to arrive which at the point no one had mentioned there would be a long wait I appreciate it was Saurday afternoon but thought it would be courteous to be made aware of the wait. Finally when the food came the ham was brown and didn't smell great and had a garlicky taste .when I spoke to a young lad about it he said it was ok it was Irish ham (did not know Irish ham was different to ours ) to be fair they gave us our money back but to say I was dissapointed is an understatement my partner ate his meal so we had to go and find somewhere else to eat and sat eating on my own which wasn't very practical So won't be visiting the Red lion any time soon

I really like this pub, on the way into town and feels like a traditional sports bar. Gets busy when there is sport on and you can reserve tables. The food is standard sort of hungry horse type fayre. Only outside space is on the street at the front. like going there.

This is definitely not a place for tourists!! I am on vacation from USA and decided to visit this pub on 25/9/25 at 1020pm with my brother. We ordered a pint of beer and then asked for another beer at 1045pm. The young red head barmaid behind the bar informed us that they had stopped serving. She then continued to serve other customers. When I asked her why she was serving other customers and not us, she replied that "they were her friends." So there is obviously one set of rules for locals or the "barmaids friends" and a different set of rules for those who just happen to be tourists visiting this pub. After that incident, I saw this notice on the bar ( photo attached ) offering free alcohol to anybody who left the pub a 5-star review on google. When I pointed out to the barmaid that it is strictly prohibited by google's reviews policy to give anyone alcohol in exchange for a 5-star review. (The reasons why this is considered unethical are obvious, but, include inflated google ratings). Anyway, she simply shrugged her shoulders and said it was nothing to do with her and that her manager did it. If you are visiting the lovely city of Chester, I recommend that you avoid this "locals only" pub.
