This reflects only my own experience as a service user. Since 2018 I have repeatedly tried to raise concerns about the mental health support I received. My experience has been that communication has broken down many times and that my attempts to resolve issues through the complaints process have not led to meaningful engagement. I found it extremely difficult to get clarity, follow up or practical support and this has left me feeling shut out and unheard. I have also found the 111 option 2 service unhelpful for my needs. In my experience it operates more like a general call centre and I did not feel I was speaking with people who could offer the level of mental health input I required. Others may find it useful but it did not meet my needs in moments of crisis. During my contacts with services I felt that some conversations and responses from staff increased my distress rather than reducing it. At times I came away feeling judged or dismissed when I was already struggling. I can only speak for myself but the impact on my wellbeing was significant and long lasting. The most difficult part has been the sense that my attempts to improve my own mental health were undermined rather than supported. I felt that what I was building for myself was pulled away and that left me in a worse position than before I sought help. I have read national research and reports on mental health outcomes in Sheffield and they match some of the concerns I have felt in my own experience. This adds to the worry that other people may also be struggling to get the help they need. My hope in writing this is not to attack individuals but to highlight how my personal experience of the system has left me feeling unsafe, unsupported and without a clear route to resolve serious concerns. I want services to listen, to acknowledge when things go wrong and to ensure that vulnerable people do not feel abandoned when they ask for help.

I have dealt with corporate affairs at this site on quite a few occasions. It is clear that the staff here are unaware of their legal obligations on quite a few matters. They clearly do not care about their work and the impact their atrocious behaviour has on people. Emails go unanswered, Phone calls are not returned, Information is not handed over without threats of an injunction, Complaints are ignored, Excuses are made for things not done, which is insulting when the excuses are so poor. The staff need two things to improve, 1) They need training in many areas, interpersonal communication, customer relations and service, GDPR, and how to follow their own policies. 2) They need motivating to actually do things. Knowing what has to be done and how to do it is useless if the staff just couldn't care less and indeed corporate affairs exude an air of apathy towards their work and other people. They have a set of policies on a range of things, which no one seems to care about following. They make promises which are never fulfilled. I have absolutely no faith in this department and it clearly needs either a major rework or total replacement,. I would give a special mention to Wendy Hedland who consistently fails to identify herself on the telephone, which makes me wonder if she is ashamed to be associated with corporate affairs and tries to hide. I would also like to give a special mention to Margaret Saunders who has clearly lost control of this department. Corporate affairs has and is failing badly. I have brought this to the attention of the relevant people and so far with no result. I firmly believe it is only a matter of time before someone dies due to failings in Sheffield Health and Social Care.
