   I started from Lock 54 the Ship Inn at Stakehill Industrial estate,Middleton towards Rochdale.Me and my dog went for a walk along the canal towards the allotments and then towards Hopwood College which leads to the Hopwood Woods.There is 2 pubs,petrol station and a car park if you didn't park at the pub,just before the petrol station there is a small bumpy car park, NO FEES

   Really nice towpath, mostly good footpath all the way. Varies quite a bit along it's length. Some interesting urban stretches and some lovely rural areas and a bit of a mix of the two. Canal is still entirely navigable so you might get lucky and see the locks in operation, a process that has barely changed in around 200 years. A few good pubs along the route of the canal too, should you be taken by an overwhelming thirst.

   From a boaters point of view this is one of the worst canals we have visited, from the Manchester end to where we are now Durn lock, not a good thing to write home about, so far, but some of the views up here are starting to look good except for the wind farms.

   This canal is beautiful in some areas and it makes for a nice morning walk. I also kayak in this area and enjoying all the views is really amazing. Its also really well kept.
