I attended the year-long in-person portrait painting course 2024/25. I knew nothing about oils and had no formal training. This excellent course covers theoretical and practical aspects of portrait painting, starting at the beginning with learning to draw in charcoal, and progressing through to the construction and use of an oil palette in monochrome and then colour. Attention is always drawn to the physiological make-up of the face, and the strict process that dictates stages of portrait development. The course is hard work and requires focus and discipline. Louis is extraordinarily patient and skilful, and nothing escapes his eye, but all is conducted with great good humour. Homework is taken seriously as a valuable tool for learning. I am so pleased that I completed this course and am now excited at what the future holds for my artistic endeavours.

Lovely group of students. Step by step very clear instructions. We were shown how to construct a believable city scape using methods that I will definitely use again. Louis as always was very encouraging. Val Roach

I completed the year long online portrait painting in oils course. It focuses on the technical side of painting, with two-way dialogue between the students and tutor throughout. Louis is a fantastic, accomplished, knowledgeable artist, and it was a great privilege to learn from him.

The Live Online Portrait Painting Course is a very thorough and exacting online course which keeps you on the ball since there are two weekly sessions with homework from what one has done in class. If you are committed, you will do well and learn a lot. I have improved exponentially! The course is structured in a way which enables one to learn step by step traditional portraiture from sketching, line drawing, comparative measurements, charcoal rendering, shadow shape block in, big form modelling, value and tonal relationships into painting and colour. There is a high attention to detail and correct rendering with an observation of colour found in facial features and facial planes. There is a classical approach with a modern twist in Louis’ approach to colour which enables one to create form with colour mixing. The online aspect is very good and well thought out with live, in-person Zoom lectures, and the use of one’s phone set up for showing Louis exactly what you are doing. This enables him to correct your work immediately. All in all, a well-structured, step by step, disciplined approach which encourages consistent progress and understanding. The online aspect is perfect for those who cannot attend the studio in person or who do not live close by.

Very welcoming art community, Wine and Paint is a great fun. Visited for the first time and enjoyed the atmosphere of deep concentration on painting, and got all the help I needed from Louis and peers. Time flies and the results are beautiful no matter what your level of experience is. Highly recommend!

Louis’ talent speaks for itself through his art. Not all great artists are good instructors. Louis is able to convey his knowledge, experience, and sheer expertise in a way that is accessible to all. Whether you are a novice, or a someone who already creates art, I guarantee you will come away satisfied that you took a class, lesson, or a course with him.

Great place to practice life drawing or painting. Friendly and relaxed, professional models and set up, refreshments included. Actual drawing time 2 hours. There are also longer courses and workshops at the academy which I would highly recommend.
