Fascinating place. Some remains of the Cistercian abbey and glorious 17th century house. Now a college with a high reputation but also the site of a marvellous Christmas market!
Lovely to explore the well tended gardens. Fantastic little additional adventure on the forest walk. With some really stunning architectural prices to discover. The sun dials are amazing, crisp detailing on 400+ year old stonework. More hidden sculpts hint at the monastery that was here before.
Gorgeous old Abbey where Declaration of Arbroath was drafted. Now a College. Lovely walk around the grounds.
I was a student at Newbattle from 1977 to 1979, taking a Diploma in Liberal Studies (plus an O level in statistics!). I enjoyed my time there and still visit Scotland as often as I can - I've even turned my wife into a Scotland fan. I often wonder what my fellow students are doing now.
The grounds and the forest adjoining are perfect for a nice circular walk, although make sure you bring walking shoes if it's been raining.
Lovely grounds to sit and enjoy the surrounding gardens, house and river . Circular walk suitable for able walkers, enjoyed by dog walkers and families out walking with pushchairs. Part of the wood decorated with fairy doors and "mystical things" for children to enjoy. A very nice way to spend a couple of hours.
This is a marvelous building. The staff are nice and helpful. You can find rabbits and squirrels in the garden in the morning. If you are lucky enough, you may even see deers.
