One of the best colleges for further education. It has sold off all its playing fields and green spaces to make way for flats and houses.
Definitely not the 'outstanding' college that Ofsted claims it to be. If I could leave a review with zero stars, I absolutely would. I left a review here during my first year last year, I'm going to update it now that I'm (unfortunately) in my second year here. Firstly, I would like to start by saying that I've studied Creative media studies on the Level 2 course, I've sat both English and Maths GCSE resits at this college, and now I'm studying art and textiles on the level three course whilst resitting maths. I'm also a student Diagnosed with both ADHD and Autism, I specify this as I will be talking about the lack of support here. During my first year at this college, the staffing was completely and utterly appalling, in all three of my assigned classes (chosen course, English and maths resits classes) Teachers would drop out halfway through the units without a word, leaving coursework completely unfinished with no idea how to progress as they wouldn't have any communication with the teacher who was coming in to replace them. I didn't even have my first media studies teacher for a month before she quit! Sometimes they'll even 'swap' around teachers from different NCC campus' if they're "more needed elsewhere." I had a really good teacher around October to December, always giving us work every lesson and supporting us, giving us tips and even extra non-mandatory work once we were finished to go more into depth with our studies so we could achieve a high grade. The teacher he was replaced with we ended up having up until the end of the academic year. He was rude, said weird things that bordered on sexual harassment on occasion and when it was reported it was brushed off by the head of the course by them merely saying "We've done background checks, there's nothing wrong with him." Not to mention that the first words this teacher said to me were "You'd be his type." when I was engaging in conversation with a fellow classmate about the topic of a paedophile. Very telling first impression is it not? Additionally, unlike our previous teacher, this teacher gave us little to no work whatsoever, we had no idea what direction to take our coursework in. Over the time I had this teacher he gave us four pieces of work in the span of 6 months. I reported this to the head of my course and he wasn't even aware we weren't being set any work over the duration this was going on. In regards to the maths course staffing, almost ALL of the teachers on the team cannot speak fluent English and have extremely heavy accents to the point it's near impossible to understand their lessons sometimes. One of my teachers last year went to the point of mocking me and bullying me sometimes whenever I would walk into her classroom so I stopped going entirely until I was able to switch classes. The teachers class I switched to didnt even actively try to teach her lessons either unfortunately, she'd just whack a past paper on your desk and tell you to "Get on with it." (unfinished review, will finish later, I would add my old review from my first year at college below but there's apparently a text limit.)
I have an EHCP, they are telling me they cannot fund my extra support due to "other people needing it more". This is the money for ME? not other people? idk but its ridiculous because i have bpd and they don't care about helping me, told me to continue waiting for extra support and nothing. there are also other people in my class with ehcps but no support. The teachers in the art course are just straight up rude and dismissive of your concerns. no understanding about students situations at al
I’m absolutely heartbroken that my parents sent me here. A complete let down and an early career crusher. Zero opportunities, zero support. Never received any type of career guidance. The most disappointing thing, is that despite having attained 4 GCSEs at grades 8 and 9, and being unhappy with the standard of the BTEC Business I had chosen thinking I would be getting industry level experience, I was not allowed to pick a new a-level. I was then instead lied to about the EPQ being a valid alevel and put down for that. As I come from an extremely disadvantaged background I have had to fight hard for myself post leaving this college, and my life has been full of hardship, which could have been easily avoided had my education not been stolen from me like this. Despite having attained two As and a B, I was not accepted to my chosen universities, that would have accommodated my potential and supported me not only during studies but setting me up for a great future, based on the fact that one of my ALevels was an EPQ- not a real ALevel. I had not the money or attention to then pay for the extra a level myself, as I had been too focused on surviving alone after been displaced from my family home. Extremely disappointed in the adults looking after me at the time, nothing can account for the awful experience I had to go through post leaving this squalid old school. So very well done NCC! I hope you’re proud of the wonderful results of taking education here!! Not.
Terrible collage with some rude and unhelpful staff. Even since November of last year was terrible. I have autism and carry a stuff animal that keeps me company, but on November 8th, I was given a story that I don’t need them when I become independent, this makes very sad and scared because if I don’t have my stuff animal with me, I will start to freak out and have panic attacks. One of my friends told me that he had suspicions with the college. one day, he had a seizure and the staff didn’t help him, the students sawed him and told them. When I started in September of last year, we used to have a room in the H department called the flat, it’s a room where we learn to do things that were part of the independent living course. Later on, they turned it into a classroom. This is terrible. And some of the staff in the H department are rude, manipulative and strict. Do not go to this college!
My daughter was one of the worst hit with isolation during covid but spent all day everyday studying to get good grades as she wants to go to medical school to train as a doctor. She chose this college to do level 3 health and social care and since starting has had nothing but agro with them, the students are there more than the teachers and are made to self study on the computer. They have mixed level 2 & level 3 meaning the level 3 students have to attend more to accommodate the other areas needed by the level 2 students. I believe this section of some students life makes a big impact on if they are going to continue into uni or drop out and from what I have seen of the college they should be ashamed of themselves they are a disgrace to their profession and have really let the students down. Thankfully it appears she is brighter than the English education system and has decided to finish her course and take the level 4 via an online provider also giving her more time to do other things as well. I really wouldn’t recommend this place for your son/daughter if you wish for them to succeed.
wish i could leave zero stars. absolutely awful place, was treated disgustingly badly by the clueless and unhelpful staff, communication was nonexistent. i left this place completely alone, traumatised, insulted and lost. i lost all interest in my favourite subject after leaving here and have not pursued anything further since, due to fear of making my trauma even worse. the only thing this college gave me was severe anxiety, loneliness, trauma, victim blaming and trust issues. if you want to not have your life ruined before its even started id advise staying away from here. no idea how it's still open.
Poorly trained tutors, Poorly managed computer storage for course work, Inconsistent timetables, Unacceptable Course managers. Great Support staff Average security Poorly maintained rooms FALSE Banner boasting 5 stars when majority of grades are bellow secondary school grades. I was there for 5-6 years and spoke with over 1,000 students from there and a large percentage of them had a bad experience.. If more than a few people say the same thing or similar then it’s a problem! WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
One star is being generous, this is my third and final year at Havering College and my experience has been mediocre at best. Communication from the college is appalling and has been for all three of my years here. It took 2 years of me repeatedly giving my personal phone number, home address, email address and mother's phone number for me to actually get any kind of information out of them. All of this was given to them in person by me at least 7 times, I filled out the forms and waited for nothing. I had to find out information about trips and such from my friends that actually did receive texts. Work experience is mandatory for you to be able to pass the end of your course, even when I had a job in retail already I still had to do work experience or I wouldn't be allowed to finish. Every year has been a repeat of the last, but with more stress. I'm a level 3 Art and Design student and in my classes recently I've been cutting out pieces of cardboard to build my face as that is what the tutor asked of us. Yes, I'm serious. Tutors expect an email or phone call if you are going to be late to a class or not show up for any reason, but can't afford students the same courtesy, there have been multiple occasions where my class have traveled to the college and had to wait for 15-20 minutes before another teacher sees us and tells us our teacher isn't in. You will also be made to attend useless and unrelated classes like 'Digital Enterprise' and 'Tutorial' which are both time wasters that you are required to take to be allowed to pass the course. Digital Enterprise can be summarized as playing silly computer games about being a good citizen, you have to achieve a certain amount of points before they let you complete it. Tutorial is just sitting around and talking about things like British values and what to do in a terrorist attack. I can't think of a useful thing I've learnt during my time here, and I am good student, this is I problem I have observed in the college with other students. I wouldn't chance coming to this college, you might have a different experience but the only positive thing I can really think of is that most of my tutors were pleasant and helped where they could. Trust the reviews, it isn't worth your time.
