There are places where you go to perform, and places where you go to learn. Blackheath Fencing Club is the latter. What stands out first are the teachers. Not loud, not self-important—just deeply attentive. They notice details you miss, correct without belittling, and expect effort rather than perfection. Instruction here is not rushed. It’s deliberate. You’re given time to understand, not just to imitate. Training happens in small groups, and that matters. You’re seen. Your mistakes aren’t hidden in a crowd, nor are they judged. They’re treated as part of the work. Progress here isn’t measured by how quickly you win, but by how clearly you think and how honestly you move. The culture is grounded in humility and decorum. Skill doesn’t excuse arrogance. Experience doesn’t override respect. Everyone salutes, everyone listens, everyone helps reset the strip. That quiet discipline creates something rare: a space that feels safe to struggle in. This is a club where you’re allowed to be a beginner. Allowed to fail. Allowed to grow at your own pace. Strength is built slowly here through patience, repetition, and trust in the process. If you’re looking for a place that values character as much as technique, where fencing is taught as both a craft and a discipline, Blackheath Fencing Club is worth your time. Come ready to work. Come ready to learn. The rest follows.

We are a friendly but competitive club with a strong senior group and an a well regarded trainee scheme that gives us a high retention rate. We have 50 adults and 35+ Musketeers between ages of 9 and 15 Foil is the dominant weapon followed by epee and then sabre. If you are a fencer already and have equipment just come along. If you are a beginner you can only join via a training course. Budding Musketeers come aboard at the beginning of each term and sometimes at half terms too. See our website for details of the next one and our fees. We welcome invitations for friendly competitions with other clubs. Being in Greenwich we are members of both Kent County and London Fencing regions so have a wide choice of competions to enter. See our web site for more info. We look forward to seeing you.
