I can't recommend the Shudokan Black Belt Academy enough. Our 6 year old has been going for around 6 months and loves it. The classes are age appropriate for youngsters and focus on building skills of all types. Our son has autism and ADHD, so we were understandably anxious at the outset, but he's found the classes fun, easy to engage in and has made some friends there too. The teaching staff are excellent, especially head instructor, Sensei Matt, who is brilliant with the kids and inclusive in his approach. He ensures shy/anxious/neurodiverse kids are comfortable and free to join in at their own pace. OSU!

We came to Shudokan in hope rather than expectation for our very shy 4 year old and we were blown away. Our son had never participated independently classes before, often preferring to watch all together. When he went for his trial he got stuck in immediately and has gone from strength to strength since. The classes are consistent in their structure and expectations which really help our son to feel relaxed enough to join in, with the young assistant instructors leading by example. We are always welcomed into the dojo with big smiles and genuine interest. Going to Aikido at Shudokan isn't like dropping into football or other extra curricular activities, it becomes a way of life, a passion and an extended family. Our son's confidence has improved immeasurably since the summer as well as his all round behaviour and we're so excited to see his journey continue.

I was considering a martial arts class for my son, who is 4 1/2, believing that it would help him with his confidence and his listening. The Shudokan Academy has proven to be a blessing, and by far the best extracurricular activity we have enrolled our son in. In contrast to other clubs he had joined, our son loves Aikido and never misses a class on the days that we can go. Not once had he asked to stay at home on an Aikido day. In fact, he gets ready for aikido faster than anything else! As for the teachers, the senseis, my son loves them and talks about them all the time. They are so good at motivating, breaking moves down and teaching that they would have made some of the best school teachers ever (being a teacher myself). They are supported by an excellent team of young helpers (remarkable youngsters) and the lovely Christine. In terms of what it has done for our son, the impact aikido has had has been remarkable: 1. His ability to follow complex instructions has developed and he is now performing 3 and 4 step moves. 2. His listening and discipline have improved no end, with his teachers at school also commenting on the difference they see in him. 3. His behaviour at home has improved. He takes pride in the behaviour tags that are taped to his belt and does not want to lose them on account of poor behaviour. 4. Most importantly, our son had a stutter that had us worried. I cannot be certain that it was aikido, as he is now reading at school and that will have made a difference. But I can’t help but feel that listening, following instructions and confidence developed at aikido will certainly have helped. All I can say is that if you’re a parent considering a martial art for your child, then try aikido at the Shudokan academy. If you’re half as happy as we’ve been then it will have been worth it.

My kids both attend Shudokan, both having started in the last two months and so far they are really enjoying it. Everyone at the dojo is so kind and welcoming, and models the qualities the characteristics they support the children to achieve. Having observed a couple of classes, I can see that the way in which they're taught supports students of all ages and abilities and encourages them to push themselves and be the best they can be. My eldest injured her knee and they were able to make adjustments to get them back on the mat and in classes, which has been a great boost to their confidence and helped with recovery.

Excellent teaching academy. Welcoming to children and adults. Has shown to encourage self awareness, confidence, respect and self defence. Would recommend to parents looking to help their little ones grow and develop in a positive way, as it has ours.

I was only in Nottingham for a few weeks and wanted to learn some self defence, the academy completely catered to my needs! For a great price I was offered three one to one sessions as well as unlimited access to classes throughout the month. Not only did I learn self defence, but have been opened up to aikido, and most importantly grown in confidence and resilience. Would 100% recommend to anyone looking for flexibility, great students to share the classes with (who were so welcome to me being a beginner) and amazing, friendly staff!

In two short years the Shudokan team have made a profound difference to me and the way I now choose to view and approach life. Physically and mentally (and as an over 50 student) I’m in the best shape of my life and making sound progress in learning new skills. I highly recommend taking up Aikido and to get the best training you can from the team of instructors here at the Shudokan Black Belt Academy.

After not taking much interest in sport at school my son started Aikido at age 8 and took to it like a duck to water. The instructors are great and my son still loves going 2 years on. The academy is not only great for children though. After watching my son training for a few weeks, I loved the traditional nature of the teaching which resonated with my previous experience in another traditional Japanese martial art and I decided to take to the mat myself. No doubt my youngest will join us on the mat in the very near future! Great academy with great instructors which I can fully recommend.
