Would give 3.5 stars if I could. Not the best, but OK. Might use them again. Pay by cash or bank transfer only. Opened up a few minutes late, but not much. Barber was chatty and jokey with other clients who arrived at the same time. Then only polite with me, but didn't make any real effort to chat. On reflection, most (if not all) other clients seemed to be people of colour/mixed heritage, so he may have thought we just wouldn't have anything in common to talk about, but I might have just looked like I didn't want to talk. He seemed to listen quite well. Not sure if he washed his hands after opening shutters etc before starting to cut, but he did put gloves on so I tried to let it slide. I probably should've mentioned to him then (at that point in time) that I have severe OCD hygiene and contamination anxieties, but it was one of those days when I wasn't feeling that confident to voice it. The rest of the cut seemed to go OK. Shave was a bit heavy handed at times, but not too close as felt pretty smooth after but no razor burn/stinging for the rest of the day/night. Burning/stinging has been an issue at other places I've been. It did trigger me a bit when he put the kettle for the hot water (for towel treatment) on the floor and then used his foot to turn it on. But I just looked away after that, so I could just assume he didn't hold the kettle near the base when lifting it up to pour it out onto the bowl. Towel treatment was different to what I'm used to, but felt nice to have several applications and gentle wipes. He could have asked if the temperature was OK for me on each application, but it was only bit hot a couple of times, so not too bad. Again, I was feeling a bit hesitant to speak up/make a fuss due to my nervous disposition on the day. As he was finishing, he did catch the cape on the floor before putting it back on me when I asked him to trim up the other side of the goatee (having done one side only). This did freak me out a bit, but figured I could fix it back at my car. I did have to mention several times my distance vision isn't good, so I couldn't judge how the cut was going very well from the chair. Then still had to specifically ask to see myself (from the front) in the hand mirror more than once before he held it in front of me. Not sure if I was speaking quietly, mumbling (which I can do without realising) or if he has a hearing problem or not as he didn't ask me to repeat anything ever. Something must have been wrong with communication though, due to both the mirror issue and the fact that when I got back to my car, I noticed the side burns had been trimmed far too high (top of the ear, when requested half way down) and were noticeably uneven. By that point though I really didn't want to take the time to go back to get it evened up, as I'd just had a big mental meltdown about the OCD triggers/issues I'd experienced (lots of antibacterial spray and wipes used, whilst standing outside my car to try and resolve them), I don't go out that much anyway and I needed to get on with other errands and get home. So I left it. No styling products, post shave balm or pre hot towel balm applied. All of which included at other places I've been, at no extra cost. Regarding payment, they only take cash or bank transfer. No card machine. And as there weren't too many waiting area seats (plus someone's jacket hanging over the one that was free - OCD trigger), I did have to stand to input the bank transfer details on my smartphone's banking app. But I managed it OK in the end and they didn't rush me to finish. £30 was a bit more than I'm used to paying, but only by £5. Price might be reasonable, considering the issues that they had any direct control over, I hadn't actually told them about my OCD and there were some things that were slightly better than average. I would definitely mention the OCD if I went again. And maybe ask for the owner (Ali) to do it. But might stick with the other guy. We'll see. Note: Photo is the day after, though not shampooed or any styling product.
