   The food was average. The prawn wasn’t particularly fresh, but the pâté was delicious. We were extremely disappointed with the apple tart — it was really, really tough, so much so that we needed a knife and quite a bit of force to cut through it, and it was almost impossible to chew. We complained to the waitress, but the restaurant was dismissive

   The steak was great, but the starters were just ok, prawns overcooked. Service was average, though I had to ask for mustard twice, and it only arrived after I’d already finished my steak. Dessert was fine — I ordered the apple tart, which came out within a minute, clearly already prepared. Unfortunately, the pastry was soft instead of crisp. Winchester has plenty of excellent restaurants, I might try somewhere different next time.

   We were advised to try this restaurant and we were really impressed. Booking online was very easy, and on arrival the staff were really friendly. We were given the option to eat I or out and we chose outside in the courtyard which was fantastic. It is very quiet and you could be outside of the city. The menu had some great things on to choose from. We enjoyed some olives and smoked almonds to start with and we chose the house rose to drink while we waited for our food. The steak tartare was brilliant, and was flavoured perfectly. I had the lamb neck to follow and was really impressed with the portion size and the great flavours. My partner had the hake that was really well cooked. We were really impressed by our evening in bistro du vin, the staff were really friendly and made a good effort to look after us. We want to return to try the tasting menu.
