   Tutbury isn't just a destination for me, it’s where my ancestral roots are. I visited in February 2024, returning to the village where my family came from. Walking through the winding streets and castle grounds felt like reconnecting with generations of history, both personal and ancient. My trip included visiting the graves of my ancestors, nestled between the historic St Mary's Anglican church, featuring a stunning thousand year old Norman arch, overlooking the graves of my great grandparents. Then there is Norman castle built on the site of an earlier Mercian fort and later destroyed by Cromwell’s forces. The weight of history here is powerful, but so is the beauty and peace. Tutbury Castle has always held a special place in my heart, not just because of its royal ties and the legends of Mary Queen of Scots, but because it’s where my parents were married. The castle’s spirit lingers in our family story. There is even an old song telling the tale Robin Hood's wedding feast said to have taken place in the castle itself. It’s these legends and layers of history that make Tutbury feel almost magical. The village is full of charm, with antique shops, cozy cafés, and friendly locals who make you feel instantly at home. For me, Tutbury isn’t just a visit, it’s a returm home to my ancestry.

   This place us fantastic, so quiet and peaceful in a wonderful setting. Sadly the curator is retiring and it will be closed until further notice and a new curator can be found. What the curator Lesley Smith has done for this place is admirable. Lesley will be greatly missed here.

   A little known castle but one of the many where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned at various times. A great history, some fabulous views though only ruins remain of the castle. There is car parking £1.50) and entry fee is £5 for adults. There is also a small cade on site Worth a visit

   Have you heard of this Castle? No, neither had I, but it was one of the places where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned (4 times here). A great place with a great history presentation from the guide. Cheap entry fee and a tea room and access to the house and ruins.

   Great place to celebrate the Jubilee. Not enough toilets or drinks facilities. Free entry which was a bonus. Fantastic place to go to chill out and admire the views.

   What a fabulous place! We were here for a 'Hand Fasting' service in beautiful surroundings. Staff were extremely helpful, making our visit go smoothly. Be aware that if you have mobility issues, there are lots of stairs, but cafe is on ground floor. Check out their history, you may be surprised at what you learn.
