   I was a client of Shapcott for six years. They managed the accounts for my two companies as well as my wife’s tax return. From the beginning I found their pricing surprising, as invoices always came without any prior estimate, but my original accountant Nick was competent so I accepted it. Unfortunately Nick unexpectedly passed away, another accountant took over and things quickly went downhill. My new accountant has never been able to answer even basic questions (only “I will get back to you”), yet still charged me for “advice” I never actually received. Each year I had to argue with Shapcott, proving I wasn’t getting the support they were billing me for. In reality, I was relying on friends and colleagues for help, not my accountant. Worse, they made serious mistakes. One year my accountant told me I owed £5,000 in tax for a company. After repeatedly asking her to check, her colleague finally admitted the correct amount was £900. Happy surprise but she never acknowledged the error or apologised. I’ve now moved to a far better (and far cheaper) accountant. To transfer my last company’s accounts, I needed Shapcott to provide information to the new firm. They then fabricated another invoice for £140 for “advice” I never received, and refused to release my records until it was paid. When I asked for details of the supposed work, they couldn’t provide any explanation. It feels like my accountant was simply logging charges against my accounts to justify her hours. I will never know for sure, but what I do know is this: Shapcott acts dishonestly. In my experience, they are a scam. Avoid them. Update: after trying really hard to get an explanation for their fee, they have filled a court order. They never picked up the phone on me nor called me back. They assume that as I am a leaving client, this is their last opportunity to milk me. I didn’t want that worry so ended up paying, but again, this was a completely dishonest invoice and deliberately wrong actions and behaviours from them. Avoid avoid avoid.

   Having been a client of Shapcotts for many years in respect of my company and private tax affairs it was a natural choice to engage them when selling my business. Surprise is the wrong word, but I was simply not aware that dealing with business sales was their forte and just how brilliant they are !! From start to finish Nick Parkes was unbelievable and having him by my side made the whole transaction seamless and undoubtedly saved me money in the process and gave me total reassurance that I was getting the best deal. Nick never missed a thing and certainly made a lasting impression with my selling agent and the solicitors in respect of his professionalism, knowledge and speed of response. He ran rings around the buyers accountants ! If you are ever thinking of selling your business save yourself time and money and go straight to Shapcotts

   Overall rating of average; 3 stars. The practice manager, Janet Shapcott can be rather rude at times when speaking to her via the telephone. However, receptionist Chris is very polite and willing to help. Other woman in reception, isn't very helpful and in need of training. Spoke to Sharon in Payroll in regards to my business, very knowledgable of the payroll sector but slightly miserable at times. Spoke with the Director, Nick Parkes, rather quiet but very friendly and welcoming, and has a lot of knowledge of the industry.
