Visited this to try their Gluten Free chips on a Friday and was very happy to say we received lovely hot chips that were gf and cooked in a separate fryer. Also asked about the oil used and the staff were able to share about this aswell. Will be visiting again as trying to find places with an allergen/intolerance can be tricky! Very happy to have chip shop chips! Thankyou

I caught them two times trying to steal from me, they gave me less fish than I ordered and paid for. The second time it happened I drove all the way back to the chip shop to address it. They gave me the missing fish but were extremely rude and disrespectful. The food served here is disgusting anyway, the chips are uncooked and soggy and fish rotten. We shall not be returning. We’ve given them too many second chances as they are a local business.

“ A Local Gem for Over 50 Years** For over two decades, Abbey Fish Bar has been under its current ownership, continuing the proud legacy of more than 30 years of fantastic food and service from the previous owners. This establishment is truly a hidden gem in the community, consistently serving excellent food at incredibly affordable prices. The fish, fresh from Blackpool and delivered regularly, is always soft, and the battered chips on Mondays and Tuesdays are an absolute treat—crispy on the outside and perfectly fluffy inside. The menu is impressively comprehensive, offering something for everyone, and the attention to detail and quality is evident in every dish. Whether you’re craving traditional fish and chips or something a bit different, Abbey Fish Bar has you covered. One of the most heartwarming things I’ve seen is the owner handing out chips to children while they wait in the queue, showing that they truly care about their customers and the community. Having lived in the area for over 40 years, I’ve seen many businesses come and go, but the Abbey Fish Bar, along with the Post Office and Global Foods, remains a constant in a changing world. Thank you to the owners and staff for keeping this hidden gem alive. You’ve provided not just great food, but a sense of tradition and comfort. Keep up the fantastic work, lads!

2024 Update: Still the best fish and chips in the area, great portions, great food, great staff, great value. Cannot recommend highly enough! Solid reliable fish and chip shop. Good quality and very generous portions make for great value for money. They do orange chips on some of the quieter days midweek. Used to come here regularly when I lived locally and still make a point of popping in whenever I'm passing.

This place is great if you have squeaky door hinges or rusty garden gates etc. Also fantastic for weight loss. Fish (cod?) was slimy and smelt bad so unfit for human consumption unless you want to be laid up with galloping trots. However, the fish batter was a wonder of science. A stodgy sponge that is capable of holding twice its mass in oil and fat. I was amazed to find that I could squeeze it and wring out an oil can full of old thick grease. Just when you thought the orange quivering blob couldn’t yield anymore, it started sweating more unctuous blubber. Remarkable sight. Sadly, the chips were no better. Wet and limp, swimming in grease and fat. Was able to rub the grease around my rusty shed door hinges though. Loosened them up well so the whole mess wasn’t a complete waste. Don’t worry, I disposed of the toxic waste sensibly. All bagged up and labelled. Wouldn’t want the alien fish batter blob to escape and terrorise Smethwick…

Damn the food from here is amazing. I only used two chippies for years but had to come here a week ago. I go chippie once a month at most, but have been here another two time in the last 7 days (3 times in total). It is clean, fresh and the staff are so friendly. Aman, the server is always smiley and polite even when you can see she is tired. She went out of her way to grab me some tissue as she knew I was going to eat in the car. Oh yeah, have the fresh plaice. It is huge, so tasty (a bit like lemon sole) and get this...... only a fiver...... what, I hear you say...... only a fiver? That's right. A fantastic all round experience..... people travel from all over to come here I heard from customers. A well deserved 5 star rating from me.

Good food. The fish are large and moist with choices of types of fish. Wedded to generous portions of chips with a choice of gluten free portions. Together with sausages, plain & southern fried chicken, a range of pies plus loads of salad in a pitta with kebab meat and if wanted curry sauce or mushy peas. Excellent.
