Great quality food at a reasonable price. Staff were welcoming and friendly. Restaurant itself had nice decor. It's on a very busy road though and parking can be difficult.
I booked our work do here to have on Saturday 13th December, so obviously a busy time of the year. From the point of booking, to the pre orders, to the arrival and the dining, it was superb. Fantastic staff, organisation the British army would be proud of and absolutely superb food. I had never been to Viraaj before but will definitely now be a regular, any place that caters for 18 people perfectly when they are already full has definitely got something right. Thank you
The place is nice. Staff very decent. It serves up fairly traditional curries with different names than normal! We didn't have a starter this round of curry clib and opted for poppadoms and main. All the mains were decent, we had a mixture of lamb balti, naga chicken and I think murgh chicken (chicken with mince meat through the sauce). All were decent. I wouldn't rate it as high as the one in Rotherham we ate at last month, or on fact any of the previous 5 we visited tbh. I had an iffy tummy as well, which can happen with me at times with spicy food. It was a decent spot but wouldn't rush back. By the same token of i were in Woodseats having a drink etc i would defo go back for another try
I recently ordered some takeaway from Viraaj and overall I had a good experience. The food was good but not amazing. I had high expectations given the price that the curry’s would be outstanding, but when my order came, I realise that the portions were very generous so it was a trade off. A good curry with great portions for a reasonable price. The lady who took my order and served me upon collection was lovely, and so were the other staff I briefly engaged with. The butter chicken was delicious, but the Bengal Naga was mediocre and the Tandoori Platter I really didn’t enjoy as it was over cooked and extremely dry. I’d visit again.
Interesting menu. Good selection of dips for the popadoms. All 4 curries were very good. The lamb was really tender. Mushroom rice was the best I had. Pashwari Nan was a bit plain but plenty flavour elsewhere. Overall definitely a 5 star experience.
Great service. Great food. I had a lamb tandoori nihari and found it delicious with the lamb falling off the bone. Although it is down on the menu as hot I didn’t think so but I did ask about heat so they might have lowered the heat. So tasty I didn’t care. Next time I can ask for more heat. The Viraaj naan I had was soft and fluffy and tasty. I think they must all be good ingredients and great cooking! Keep it up!
TLDR: Really tasty food, extensive menu, friendly staff with great ambience and good value for money but unhygienic practice noted, so cannot rate it 5/5. We went here for a birthday meal as Viraaj had recently been named as one of the nation's finest and managed to book a table for 8 on the day. As it's on a high street there is no dedicated parking, but you can park by the roadside. The restaurant had a nice atmosphere and well-dressed, helpful staff. There was one chap, likely the manager who was especially cheerful, which is always lovely to see. Alcohol is served in house. The menu is extensive and the food was really tasty and very reasonably priced. It's easy to see why this place is so highly treasured by those in the know. A lot of dishes are rated as "hot", but I didn't think the "medium" dish was too spicy at all. Online, Viraaj has a food hygiene rating of 4 and I'm sure the food is absolutely fine, but we sent two glasses back with lipstick on and I saw the waiter clean a plate with his finger before handing it to someone at the table - at least use a cloth, guys!
New year's eve. Extremely disappointed. We are regular customers both to eat in and take away most weeks. Rang up to check if delivery was available. Our usual lovely lady said yes but gave apologies delivery was 90 minutes. Not a problem (it's 7pm) I will call back in 10 minutes with our order, which we did. Called with our order to be answered by a surly young man who refused our order and said to place it via the app. Of course we said, because it's our favourite restaurant. I placed the online order at approx 7.15pm. Order confirmed immediately. I received an email an hour later saying our order had been cancelled. Devastated, we called the restaurant to check if this was so. The call was answered by a confrontational, surly, lairy male member of staff. The member of staff said what did we want him to do. My partner tried to explain that this was our regular restaurant and that we wanted to check if our order had definitely been cancelled. The member of staff shouted at my partner that he was very busy, that the restaurant was rammed and that he wasn't going to listen to him. My partner offered to go and collect the curry if necessary. The member of staff shouted he didn't have time for this, our curry was cancelled and that we should order from somewhere else. He then slammed the phone down. Upset but needing food we ordered our curry from somewhere else. At 9.15 a delivery man knocked on our door with a delivery from Viraaj. I explained that we had food from somewhere else and showed him the email where the food had been cancelled. I am very disappointed in the service we have received tonight. As I said, we order and eat at Viraaj regularly and are usually impressed with the service and quality of the food. To have someone shout at you on the phone is not nice. Especially when it would have taken 2 minutes to be polite and check the status of our order. I will also say, if you had said you could not accommodate us tonight we would have happily gone somewhere else in the first instance.
Went here as a walk in not pre booked but there was lots of space and we were seated straight away. Good selection of curry’s and a really helpful waiter who was able to suggest suitable options. I had a lamb dish which was lovely and flavoursome although a bit more heat would have been even better. Good service, good pickle tray too and not skimped on. Good value at less than £20 a head for a drink, main, rice and naan and poppadoms.
