We went on a quiet Tuesday, Sat in upstairs. Superb fish and chips the best ive had in a long time huge portion. A bit pricey but its expected in a town like this. (To the owner manager, 18/9/25 The door on the upstairs kitchen requires a soft close mechanism adjustment so the door doesn't slam when the staff go in and out). We will go back here again.

One of the best fish and chips we’ve had, perfectly crispy and full of flavor

Decent chippy with good chips and good batter. They do battered mars bar, but unfortunately don't do scraps. If ordering the pie, it can be dry so be sure to order gravy.

Great quick take out meal from this local fish n chips restaurant when other places were closing up shop! We’ve been visiting from the US and fish and chips have been a sought out treat on our journey so a quick take out version made us feel like “home folks.” The servers were kind and helpful by realizing right away we were from FAR out of town and could use some advice on ordering and boy did they help with advice! We enjoyed our meal. I ordered mind with curry sauce rather than mushy peas. I don’t know what the peas needed other than salt but it’s one concept this southern can’t get behind; even Canadian knew fries needed brown gravy rather than peas but to each their own- this country boy from Mississippi will take curry sauce, malt vinegar, brown gravy or ranch dressing any day before he covered “chips” in mushy peas. Still a delicious meal that we’ll remember for a long time.

I hate to leave a bad review, but today's disappointing experience has left a decidedly "bad taste". We chose to eat in the restaurant above the Takeaway, but were immediately met by the stink of fish. We should have turned back and left at that point. We commented to the 2 waiting staff who apparently couldn't smell it ..... obviously nose blind. Our orders came, and visually looked great. Turned out that the fish was simply OK, but the chips were dreadful, tasteless and many were under cooked. Best bit !! the bread and mushy peas and the smart toilets. The server did ask if all was OK when we paid. We told them how poor it was, but that's as far as it went, no apology, or sorry I'll tell/get the manager .... nothing. Not impressed.

Excellent food today 2/3/23 the waiter was very friendly and even let us move tables when I slightly larger one came free. Thank you for a brilliant lunch. Restaurant special is definitely a bargain.

Very disappointed. Had fish and chips from here many times, usually good. However chips were undercooked and the fish looked grey, thin and unappetising - threw it in the bin Will definitely not return.

I was surprised really with this having read the reviews, personally I found them tasteless, the fish thinner than a wafer and the mushy peas more mush than peas! The ducks near the river seems to like them though.

Waited at bottom of stairs for a table for a significant time to say it was almost empty. The waiter that greeted us was very polite and showed us to our table unfortunately that's the only good point today. The waitress we had was very blunt and hovered over us til we chose instead of asking if we were ready. I said I hadn't chosen yet and she just pointed to something on the menu and said 'here have this' The plates weren't exactly slammed down but they could have been placed with more etiquette. I did have a fish shaped plate which was nice and quirky but it spun every time I touched my food. The atmosphere was a awkward in a word, near silent and the waitress hovering around when the restaurant is narrow made her look out of place. Yhe batter on the fish was extremely greasy so we didn't eat any of that. The waiter did ask if everything was OK, he was polite and had a patient tone, we said yes as he wasn't the issue. The waitress didn't ask but promptly brought out bill over as soon as we were finished. Really disappointed because we go to this fish shop every time we are in Bakewell but have always had take away and it's always been very tasty, fresh and good value for money, always been a 5* before today. I would return, but never to the restaurant.

Sally the manager served us. She is friendly and cheerful. Food was hot and tasty. Had to wait for a table but was worth it. UPDATE Went again yesterday (04/10/21). Nothing had changed. Staff excellent, very clean and still had to queue to get in. Still fantastic service and food was delicious. Jewel in the crown called Bakewell
