Had a wonderful experience at Maharani. A friend recommended this place. The food was excellent and loved their Chef’s special. We enjoyed the Nepalese Lamb Hot fry , Hindu Kush vegetable Niramish and ginger naan. Well done Maharani !! Wil be back again.

My first visit to this fine establishment came by invitation from a dear friend. Since its founding in 1958, Maharani has stood as a cherished landmark of authentic Indian and Bangladeshi cuisine, right in the heart of South London. From the outside, it may appear to be a typical Indian restaurant, but step inside and you are greeted by a stylishly modern décor that sets it apart. Even more exciting, the owner shared plans for a complete refurbishment, which will introduce a fresh, contemporary ambience while preserving the restaurant’s unwavering commitment to culinary excellence. Our party of four embarked on a memorable culinary journey guided by recommendations from our generous host and the accomplished manager, Alex—a Scotsman delightfully at home running an Indian curry house. We began with starters of crispy Bengali Fried Sardines and succulent Lamb Shashliks served with fluffy Peshwari Naan. The main courses were simply outstanding: a beautifully slow-cooked Parsi Lamb Dhansak, a rich and flavourful Chittagong King Prawn Bhuna, and an array of classic sides including Tarka Daal, Saag, and crisp Bhajis. Each dish was faultless—bursting with authenticity and flavour. Equally impressive was the service. The waitstaff went above and beyond—whether because we were special guests or simply a reflection of their natural hospitality, it made the evening all the more special. Altogether, it was an unforgettable dining experience—Maharani truly lives up to its reputation, and I left with both my appetite and my heart deeply satisfied. Ahmed Hussain 22 Sep 2025

We had a take away and it was the best Indian food I’ve had in a long time. Well priced. Tastes like home cooked Indian meal - not too oily nor over spiced. Defintely a five stars

The oldest Indian Restaurant in South London since 1958 & still serving a variety of authentic curries to Clapham. It's always good to see a bit of nostalgic mainstay in the ever-evolving high street but that doesn't mean this place hasn't kept up with the times - once you visit you'll see exactly why they're still around. I came here recently with a small group of friends and all of us enjoyed our time here. Upon arrival we were greeted by one of the waiters and some traditional & modern Indian music playing in the background. The waiters are friendly and attentive but most importantly, the food was well-presented and delicious! I would recommend trying a starter or two, especially the samosas as they sometimes have non-standard fillings. The starter platter is best suited for 2 people, in my opinion. I got the Lamb Karahi curry and my friend got the Coconut Fish Curry and a Biryani which also comes in a sealed pastry crust. A single naan bread is plenty and can be shared between two. All of it was delicious! I only wish there was a bit more curry and pilau rice as I have a moderately-sized appetite but otherwise it was perfect.

Didn't need to book to get a table. The food and service was excellent. Will definitely go there again.

Really tasty food and a well-maintained restaurant with quick service; however, the staff whilst efficient, weren't particularly chatty or offering/checking on us during the meal.

This is a great restaurant and I would definitely recommend it to anyone wanting a great indian meal. I come here for special occasions and it is amazing! The staff are VERY friendly and even have a conversation with us (we know them). The food is absolutely delicious and is not too fancy, it just gets to the point and you can get a brilliant curry/korma. Also the price is worth what you are getting, If I could give this more than 5 stars I could!

Good value and great tasting food. This place isn’t fancy or pretentious, it’s just really good curry and the staff are super friendly and I’ve personally never had a bad meal here which is why we keep coming back. For 2 people sharing a curry and side dish with the naan and rice plus a drink each it’s around £30 which in this day and age is very good value for money. If you’re looking for a good classically English curry house this place should tick all your boxes.

If you want a traditional Indian meal out in Clapham with no twists or gimmicks, choose Maharani. Impeccable service and reasonable prices.
