One of the great bars in the centre of town. Great keg and draft list, nice atmosphere, type of place you can find a corner and set like jelly. Added bonus that they don’t allow people to reserve tables.

Supremely atmospheric bar in the catacombs under Bridge St., serving four cask ales, ten local craft beers, and a wall full of premium spirits, wines and cocktails. Wall to wall tiles, several distinct seating areas, and displays of the Victorian history of the building make for a cool vibe.

Love this pub inside and out. It’s got so much history and charm. The building used to be the Manchester & Salford Children’s Mission back in Victorian times, where they ran a kitchen for kids and the homeless. Now it’s this brilliant underground pub, and you can still see the old glazed brick walls when you head downstairs, which just adds to the atmosphere. I’d love to see more of that story told inside. There are a few old photos up, but no info with them... a bit of context would make it even better. Doesn’t put me off going though, it’s still one of my favourite spots in Manchester.

The Gas Lamp is a craft beer pub which opened in 2010. The pub is in the former Manchester & Salford Children’s Mission building, a late Victorian structure and it retains much of its historical character with features like glazed brick walls and a minimalist interior. The pub is situated in a basement, accessed via a small doorway from the street, which is easy to miss. The Gas Lamp offers four handpumps with real ales from Pomona Island in Salford, and other small, independent breweries. The bar’s focus on local and lesser-known brews, avoiding mainstream brands, and that makes it quite special.

Love classic pubs like this that have a great range of craft beer. We sat admiring the deco, history and culture of the pub. Great beers as well, will definitely be back.

Very quirky establishment some great craft beers on tap from local breweries and beyond. Massive whiskey options also and a nice visual history on the walls of what it used to be before a bar.

A favourite of ours since moving to Manchester. Friendly staff, chilled vibe and great selection of beers in an authentic, vintage environment. It's a hidden gem, down some stairs in a basement and stands out from the usual garish, chain or flashy cocktail bars of Spinningfields.

One of those bars that are hidden in plain sight. Just a few doors up from the masons resteraunt, there's a great big sign above the door way down the steps to this Victorian drinking den. Plenty of cask ales served as well as some favourites. The tiled rooms probably original are timeless which gives it the Victorian feel. Just imagine how many people have frequented this establishment over the years.

28/09/22: been here many times! Always a great selection of craft ales, unusual brews, but something for everyone! The Gas Lamp is an interesting pub. Housed in the former Manchester & Salford Children's Mission building, the pub has an impressive frontage, but you could easily miss the small doorway that leads down to this basement bar. On descending the dimly lit stairs, the room you enter is certainly different for a pub - Victorian glazed brick walls and little in the way of decoration. The bar is along the wall to the rear and is a sparse wooden affair. The real ales on offer are interesting - no "famous" national brands here - the beers are selected from smaller interesting breweries, many of whom are not seen regularly even in Manchester's multi-ale houses. The Gas Lamp now has its own brewery, Pomona Island, located in Weaste in Salford.
