This post is from Steve Foxcroft On September 9th I underwent a HoLEP operation carried out by Mr Matthew Liew at Spire Manchester to free up my ability to pass urine having suffered a total blockage whilst on holiday on a cruise in the Canaries and having had a succession of catheters since. The operation has been, I feel, a total success as everything is back to normal faster than anticipated with minimal bleeding (which ceased on the 25th September), minimal initial discomfort and no incontinence. At all points in the journey Mr Liew and his associates showed empathy and were confident this was the correct solution - I am indebted to Mr Feyisitan, the Urology consultant at Leighton Hospital, for recommending Mr Liew. The care at Spire together with the follow-up by the nursing staff and Mr Liew has been excellent and I have no hesitation in recommending this modern treatment and the team at Spire.

Having been treated by Mr Matthew Liew, for an enlarged prostate by HoLep surgery at the Spire Hospital Manchester, I have nothing but praise for him and the staff at the hospital. Every stage of the procedure was clearly explained, and any concerns were dealt with. The pre-op was relaxed but thorough. Prior to surgery I benefited from the advice of a urology physiotherapist which helped my recovery. The nursing staff on the ward were attentive professional and caring. A nice touch was the phone call the day after discharge enquiring how I was. My recovery has been excellent no doubt due to the standard of treatment. I am now back to a normal life and peeing like a teenager

I went to see Mr. Liew a few months ago for a consultation regarding a procedure I had been considering for a long time. He was extremely informative, approachable and knowledgeable. A couple of weeks later I had surgery booked. The surgery went extremely swimmingly. I had a minor post op complication (infection) and within a couple of hours this was addressed and treated. Just recently had a 6 weeks follow up appointment and have been discharged. Extremely happy with everything start to finish and I could not recommend Mr. Liew enough. If you are considering going private for a urologist, he is the one! Thank you Mr. Liew for everything.

My prostate problems arose following a relatively routine eye operation; basically, after the operation, I found I could not urinate. A catheter was fitted and there followed nearly five months under the care of a local NHS hospital with visits to A and E, UTIs, large amounts of blood in the urine, extreme pain, soreness, and such like. At one point I was hospitalised for eight days and an emergency operation was performed to cauterise bleeds from the prostate. Quality of life suffered. Day-to-day tasks became a trial, visits were curtailed and holidays cancelled. Finally, I was referred for a HoLEP procedure under the NHS but, because of the long waiting time and the loss of quality of life I opted for the operation to be performed at Spire Manchester by Mr Matthew Liew. The operation was performed within a few weeks from initial consultation. At that initial consultation, the procedure was thoroughly explained and all my questions answered. I was extremely satisfied with the treatment that I received during all my time at Spire Manchester under Mr Liew's care. Post-op, the staff were kind, attentive and supportive. They explained how the operation had gone and what to expect in the coming days and weeks. My recovery so far has followed what was outlined; blood in the urine ceased after about ten days and incontinence has diminished week by week and although still present it has only been six weeks since the operation; it is manageable and much improved since the early weeks. What has changed is my general quality of life. As my wife said, it's given us our lives back since we must be aware of the impact that this has not just on ourselves but on friends and loved-ones too. We are extremely grateful for everything that Mr Liew and the other staff have done for us and we would highly recommend this route to anyone. If I can add any further detail I would be delighted to do so.

With one exception at reception over a cancelled appointment the treatment I received was superb. Mr Liew the consultant I saw gave ne a full explanation of the procedure at a prior appointment and on the day again explained what would be happening. All staff were extremely helpful and considerate. Following the procedure, again all the nursing staff were very kind and attentive to any requests. On discharge after approximately five days I was fully recovered with no leakage and no discomfort whatsoever.. The flow rate I now experience is as if I were a teenager again. Marvelous. I am glad I underwent the procedure, in particular in the care of Mr Liew

I became a patient of Professor Sangar a year ago after being seen by a number of urology teams/specialists. I have an unusual cancer so Professor Sangar was deemed the best to look after me and he has been nothing short of amazing. He researches what may be best and then includes me in decisions for treatment options. He is happy to answer questions and is patient and friendly at all times. I know I’m in very safe hands and am grateful for his care. I should also add that Professor Sangar is supported by a great team including his PA, Georgina, who goes out of her way to help. I can’t recommend Professor Sangar and his team highly enough.

Mr Chow is an excellent Urological Surgeon. His care, attention and kindness in dealing with a urological emergency as well as his obvious technical skill in doing so is much appreciated . Would highly recommend Mr Chow, his team and colleagues.

I just wanted to thank Professor Sangar and all the team who looked after back in July 2021. I visited Spire for day surgery and I cannot fault the pre and post care I received in the weeks leading up to my operation, the day of the op and in follow up. A very calm experience as well as professional, courteous and stress free. Thank you very much.

I was first diagnosed with prostate and bladder cancer in November 2016 since when I have been under the care of Professor Sangar. My prostate cancer was treated by a major procedure in May 2017. The bladder cancer was dealt with by a series of treatments over a 2 year period culminating in January 2019 since when I have had regular cystoscopies. At every stage Professor Sangar explained the alternative treatments available and we worked together to agree the way forward. The combination of two major treatment programmes over some 3 years has resulted in some difficult side effects although the treatments have been successful in keeping the cancers at bay. Throughout this whole process I (and my wife) have had to deal with difficult news and unpleasant side effects. At every stage we have received a level of care from Professor Sangar above and beyond what we might reasonably have expected. He is professional, considerate and with a welcome sense of humour when the mood needs lifting! He has even responded to requests for advice and help on two occasions when he was on holiday. I have always felt (and continue to feel) confident that whatever cancer throws at me Professor Sangar will be there to advise and help as a consummate professional and as a friend. I am so glad that he was the consultant that fate chose for me!

I have been blessed to have been looked after by Prof Sangar for 10 years. At all times he has been unfailingly kind, caring, gentle both in administering treatment and in breaking to me occasional difficult news. When I have had questions I know that his delightful secretary, Georgina, will pass them on and I will receive a response by return. He always treats me with great respect and dignity.
