The staff are rude and the atmosphere is not welcoming which is a shame as this is my local. Every time I’ve been here the staff have had an attitude which sours what is otherwise a pleasant shop. Coffees are also tiny for the price point, you can walk 5 mins up the road and get better quality for cheaper
When I entered Matcup Roastery, I didn’t feel welcome. I came in curious and was initially looking for beans for my coffee machine, which should have been a good opportunity to start a conversation and build rapport. Instead, I immediately sensed tension from the lady behind the counter, as if she was already annoyed. I asked what coffee beans was being served and then ordered a flat white, but the entire interaction felt off. Her manner came across as irritated rather than welcoming. Shortly after, another patron entered the store, and her tone noticeably changed — she was much warmer and sweeter with him. At that point, it was difficult not to feel that I wasn’t welcome, and it felt as though my race played a role in the difference in treatment. As for the coffee itself, it was meh. Not the worst I’ve had, but certainly not the best either. Paying £4.10 for an oat flat white feels excessive, especially when you can get a better flat white elsewhere in the central London for £3.40 or less. Overall, this is an easy one to skip. There are better specialty coffee spots nearby in the neighbourhood that offer both better coffee and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere.
The prices are a bit high compared to Costa or Starbucks, especially since the coffee portion is quite small and the flavour isn’t particularly distinctive. The pastries also feel a little overpriced. Seating could be more comfortable, as most chairs aren’t very relaxing. The staff seem friendly with regular customers, but as a new visitor, I didn’t feel especially welcomed. Considering the prices, I think there’s room for improvement in both customer service and food quality. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend this place at the moment.
Myself and my sister visited Matt Cup Roastery on our recent trip to London. We were drawn to the aesthetics immediately. The whole place had a lovely laid back feed. The staff were super friendly and the coffee was delicious - they even roast their own coffee beans. We also loved the coffee cups and saucers and the coffee art was a lovely touch too. There are bookshelves beside comfortable sofas - along with a selection of items to purchase. We could have easily sat there all sampling their coffee and soaking in the surroundings. We can’t wait to come back again the next time we are visiting.
First time visiting the place and quite enjoyed the retro, old style of the coffee shop. Staff offered good and friendly service. Unfortunately they didn't have a large selection of pastry, but on the other hand they did have some delicious desserts on their menu. I gave it 4⭐️as inside is a little bit crowded as the tables are quite close to each other, so if you are looking for some privacy the sitting area outside would be great. The prices are within the same range as Costa, Pret etc. Definitely a chill spot for a friends get together.
Croissants just perfect - freshly backed at the place. Coffee is very good + loyalty program for the customers.
Now a daily ritual! I've written most of my current book while enjoying the hospitality of the nice folks at Mattcup Roastery. Lovely, friendly ambience; good music at just the right volume; Leytonstone's best coffee; personable staff; and fresh treats from the bakery. Extremely convenient for the Leytonstone High Road stop but also a place to settle in and meet friends. Very glad to have this fantastic addition to the neighbourhood just around the corner from me.
Nice coffee, friendly staff, cakes stale and rock hard. Asked for pecan pie hot and it was not hot at all. Or even put in merry chef oven.
Cosy, trendy space. Great selection of drinks, smoothies, milk shakes and cakes. Perfect for chilling out and unwilling. Staff are friendly and welcoming.
