As a student on a tight, shoestring budget, I was enticed by the apparent bargain of this establishment’s ‘Sides and Tidy’ offer. I was soon to find out, however, that all was not as it seems. After an unexpectedly prolonged stint in an uncomfortable chair, with perhaps the worst bedside manner I have experienced at a hairdressers (suffice to say, every conversation I proposed was ‘cut short’), the sides and tidy was ‘complete’. So I stood up, finally accepting what I saw in the mirror before me was beyond saving, and approached the counter, thinking that, at the very least, it would only set me back by £6. This, however, was only the beginning. After some uncommunicated confusion apropos the price on the part of the till operator, I awkwardly suggested the sides and tidy option, to a cold reception. Repeated queries were made as to whether I had had ‘any cut off the top’, and my hapless protestations that a) only a minute ‘thinning out’ process had been applied to the top (corroborated by the admittedly supportive actual hairdresser) and b) the ‘Sides and Tidy’ option never actually specified any cut to the top rendered it void, were met only with a surly and repetitive response: ‘it’s still a haircut though isn’t it’. Defeated, put out, and despondent at my new, unsatisfactory haircut and my molested bank account, I was forced to pay the full price (£11) and leave in a humiliating furore. All in all, I have never been more dissatisfied with a hairdressing experience: a fact made all the more damning considering my mother cut my hair with sheep shearers until I was 14.
