Extremely Unprofessional Experience at Sainsbury’s Local – Hounslow West I would like to share a very disappointing and frustrating experience I had at the Sainsbury’s Local store. I visited the store today around 7 PM after finishing work, planning to buy a box of 10 beers. I fully understand and support the need for age checks when purchasing alcohol, but the way the situation was handled by one of the staff members, identified as GM, was completely unacceptable and unprofessional. At the checkout, GM looked at us and immediately asked for ID, which is standard procedure. However, the issue began when she refused to accept the valid ID I offered. Since I do not drive, I do not have a UK driving licence. In the UK, this leaves me with two main forms of identification: my passport and my BRP/eVisa, both issued by the government. Like many people, I do not carry my passport to work every day because it can easily be lost, damaged, or forgotten at the workplace. To keep it safe, I only carry it when absolutely necessary. At first, I showed my digital visa information on my mobile, which clearly verifies my age and identity. GM refused to accept it. She was also unwilling to provide her name when asked, which I find highly unprofessional for someone dealing with customers. Trying to resolve the issue properly, I went all the way back home to bring my physical BRP, which clearly displays my date of birth and is an official identity document issued by the UK government. Despite this, when I returned to the store, GM refused to accept the BRP as well. This made absolutely no sense, as BRPs are widely recognised as valid ID for age verification and are used throughout the UK for official purposes. Instead of accepting it, she insisted that I show my passport—something that people do not and should not be expected to carry around daily. Her behaviour then became even more dismissive. Rather than helping or explaining any policy, she simply told us to “go to another store” if we wanted to buy alcohol. After being made to travel twice for no valid reason, this response felt extremely rude, disrespectful, and discriminatory. It was as though she intentionally wanted to deny the sale without any proper justification. The whole interaction gave a strong impression of bias and unfair treatment. What concerns me most is that GM’s attitude showed a complete lack of understanding of acceptable IDs and a lack of customer service training. This is not just poor judgement—this is incorrect handling of government-issued identification, which should never happen in a reputable store within Hounslow West. A BRP is a legitimate form of ID, and refusing it without any valid reason is not only inconvenient but disrespectful to customers who follow the law and present proper documentation. Additionally, being spoken to rudely and being told to go elsewhere, after already making an unnecessary second trip, was unacceptable. No customer deserves to be treated this way. The entire experience felt hostile, unwelcoming, and discriminatory, and it reflects very poorly on store management and training standards. I sincerely hope that Sainsbury’s takes this matter seriously, provides proper training to its staff, and ensures that customers—especially those who rely on BRPs and eVisas—are treated with fairness, respect, and basic courtesy. No one should be subjected to such behaviour when they are simply following the rules and providing valid identification

I was visiting the country recently and stopped by a Sainsbury’s near the station. While browsing the aisles and trying to figure out the meal deal options, a staff member named Raj approached me to see if I needed any help. He kindly walked me through all the choices and even assisted me with making a coffee at the Costa machine. We had a lovely chat, and his friendliness and professionalism really stood out. Raj is a real asset to the store and perfectly embodies what great customer service should be. 10/10 from me

A manager can’t remember his name helped me yesterday, he had a beard and long hair. I asked for condensed coconut milk. He was very helpful directed me straight to the product and also offered me an alternative. I think this was great service as normally people just point at the product saying it’s over there. Thank you for your help

No stars for the rude and arrogant evening staff and 4 stars would be for the daytime staff. Evening staff need training in common decency let alone people skills. Rude , arrogant and couldn't care less to help you . Disgusting.

The Gujarati lady in Sainsbury’s was so rude she acts like she owns the store. Such bad customer service from her side. We had finished our shopping and wanted to buy some extra carrier bags for personal reasons. I politely asked if there was a limit, and she said there wasn’t. She then gave us 5 bags and asked us to pay for them first. Just as we were about to pay, we thought we might need more, so we asked for 5 additional bags and I kept my Nectar card ready to scan. The moment she saw it, her attitude completely changed. She suddenly refused, saying she could only sell me 1 more bag because “people scan the Nectar and then claim it for themselves and do some sort of dodgy business with the bags.” This made absolutely no sense, and she made us feel like we were doing something wrong or even criminal just for buying extra bags. She kept making unnecessary comments I have no idea what “dodgy business” she was referring to when talking about people buying carrier bags, but her tone and attitude were insulting and humiliating. What’s worse is that she was perfectly fine selling more bags before, then suddenly decided to accuse us for no reason. We went straight to another Sainsbury’s afterwards and bought the same number of bags without any problem, which just proves this was her personal attitude, not a store policy. Totally unacceptable behaviour.

After having done the smart shop, the display said they need to check. I asked and waited for staff to do the checks. No one showed up, had to go through the till with the items I bought. Waste of time to smart shop at this branch. They either don't have staff, don't wanna hire more folks, or bad management.*and they charged me twice at the till for the same item.

Small Sainsbury's with a wide selection of products. Perfect for grabbing a sandwich on way to work or a pizza on the way home. Lots of self service tills and always a couple of staff on hand to help.
