I didn’t have much hope after reading the reviews for Wigan CAMHS, but I want to share a more positive experience to give others hope. After my 9-year-old son began experiencing excessive panic attacks and palpitations, our GP advised us to go to A&E. But my son is a germophobe, and after waiting four hours in Bolton A&E, we were told it would be another five hours just to be seen by CAMHS. For his mental well-being, we had to leave. I feared we’d be lost in the system again—but to my surprise, we were given a telephone consultation and then an in-person assessment by CAMHS within 10 days. That’s when we met Catherine Gale, who was nothing short of a godsend. Within 20 minutes of meeting my son, she gently asked if he’d ever been assessed for autism after just 20 minutes of talking to him! He hasn’t been diagnosed, though we’ve been under the paediatrician since he was two due to his quirks. Catherine made me feel seen—as a parent who’s been struggling with her sons OCD, anxiety, panic attacks, and possible autism for seven long years with no support. More importantly, she saw my son. She spoke to him with genuine kindness and respect, and I think that allowed him to unmask, even just a little. Yes, the NHS is stretched and CAMHS is under immense pressure, but in just six months, they’ve done more for our family than the past seven years with the Wigan paediatric team. I’m so grateful—and I hope others find the help and compassion we did.

Your child’s experience here varies on what worker you get and how bad your problems are. Try it out (if you even get past the waiting list), and see what ‘lucky’ experience you get!

Absolutely appalling service from Wigan CAHMS. Children are treated as a case reference number. You can never get through on the phone and you do not get a call back when they say they will. Staff clearly suffer from compassion fatigue.

It seems that CAMHS in general have no idea how to deal with Autistic and ADHD people. I consider the way Ince treated my friend's daughter to be abusive. I'm the one who had to diagnose her ADHD and guide her towards official diagnosis. They saw her at Ince and couldn't see what was under their noses. They thought that dragging her (literally kicking and screaming) away from her mum, locking her in the room and demanding that she look them in the eyes when eye contact makes her anxious was the best way to go with a seriously anxious early teen who (I have no doubt it will turn out) is also ADHD. There may even be autism there. I am autistic and ADHD and it takes one to know one. And while neither autism nor ADHD are mental health conditions MH services ought to be able to spot them. All they did was make her anxiety worse. If you can't keep clear of this place at least calmly stand your ground with them and don't allow them to push you around. Don't be thinking that they know best because I have serious doubts that they do. If it feels wrong then it probably is. CAMHS? More like HARMS (Highly Aggressive Repellent Malignant Services). Zero stars, but that option isn't available.

Shocking- for a body that is supposed to help children's welfare, well done in doing the exact opposite. No appointments, nobody answering calls...

Since my first worker left I've had next to no support and the one appointment I had since him I was just made to feel worse with how I was treated. They have offered very little help for some time now.
