Neil designed a kitchen and utility room for us as part of our whole ground floor refurbishment. From the initial meeting Neil listened to, and accommodated our ‘must haves’ and ‘would likes’ as well as offering his own suggestions. Neil was always patient with our changes of heart, doubts and possibly overambitious ideas and we ended up with kitchen and utility rooms which are both beautiful spaces that have had many compliments, as well as practical areas for family life which are a joy to use. I would not hesitate to recommend Neil and his team for your future projects.

Neil and his team did a superb job on refurbishing my tired, shabby galley kitchen into a beautiful space that's now a joy to spend time in. The attention to detail was above and beyond expectations. The price, competitive to High Street brand names, however, the quality of the materials and workmanship second to none. I could not fault one thing and rate every aspect of their work as outstanding, 5*. Exactly as their tag line says, "bespoke kitchens at affordable prices".

Against The Grain designed and installed our kitchen recently and we have been absolutely delighted with the quality of work. Neil couldn’t have been more helpful throughout the process and made some very helpful suggestions to improve on our initial ideas. The design is both aesthetic and practical and makes excellent use of the space. I recommend them highly!

Against The Grain have just completed our dream Kitchen and we could not be happier. The brief was understood by Neil perfectly and the design was far better than the other companies that we approached… the cost was also lower. The quality is excellent and the storage layout is better than we thought possible. Thanks so much for our lovely Kitchen, we will recommend in a heartbeat.

After 25 years we wanted to give our kitchen a thorough overhaul – and needed to work around a legacy of unhelpful buttresses and wonky walls. In our research we found that full off-the-peg units led to for too many compromises, and sub-optimal use of space; the prices for full custom-built pieces were alarming – and mostly unnecessary. ATG provided a great balance: some standard units, and some custom design and/or dimensions. Then there’s enough choice in the quality of fixtures and fitting to satisfy most people and budgets. Helpfully, Neil was also very competitive on pricing for appliances, so we got everything from ATG. Just as important as the hardware is the design and fitting. We already had a good idea of what we wanted, but Neil added some good ideas of his own and made it all work. Similarly, his recommended fitter (Dan) just got on with it, and had pride in his work. The also co-ordinated all other trades as part of the ‘project management’. Inevitably, some things didn’t go according to plan, but between them they just sorted it all out without fuss. If we had to do it again we wouldn’t change anything.

We are so happy with our new kitchen that Neil has designed and supplied! It is truly our dream kitchen. We found Neil after doing some research on the web because we were unhappy with the designs and cost from other kitchen suppliers. From the first meeting with Neil we knew he was the right person for what we wanted. We cannot recommend Neil enough to anyone who is looking for a new kitchen or bedroom furniture. Indeed we like so much our kitchen design that we asked Neil to do our bedrooms too and he did not disappoint us. Exceptional design, great value for money and very trustworthy.

We’ve just had our kitchen finished and are absolutely delighted with it. We went to all of the main suppliers and were completely underwhelmed by their designs. Then Neil was recommended to us and we are so pleased he was. He came to visit to look at the house and to discuss what we wanted. The kitchen was to be built in a new extension which wasn’t built at the time but he had the imagination and experience to come up with a fantastic design. We had to make some changes to house the boiler in a different place but this caused no problems at all. Neil has a brilliant can do attitude. Joe fitted the kitchen and did a great job. And for all this it was no more expensive than the high street chains. Couldn’t be more pleased. Thanks Neil. Pics attached, decorating and floor still to do!

We initially contacted Neil (Against the grain) in April 2021 for designing our new kitchen. Among all the local suppliers, he was the only one who instantly offered to visit our place to take measurements and then discuss our requirements at our home. He came at the exact time promised and spent a good chunk of time understanding us and our lifestyle and our requirements for the kitchen. Ours was slightly more complex as we were moving the kitchen to an adjacent room and we wanted the plumbing works to be least intrusive and the electric works to also be planned well. We also wanted the existing kitchen space to be redesigned as a new spare / guest room. Neil provided us with his design ideas within a week to 10 days of meeting us and he got it bang on at the first attempt. He took in a whole lot of information and converted it into a design that immediately worked for us. We had some minor change requests which he seamlessly integrated into his design. He then further arranged for us to visit the kitchen counter top showrooms for us to pick our counter. He also worked with us in helping select / ordering the sink / taps and other accessories. He kept us up to date with the order progress and started our project on time. There were a couple of minor hiccups procuring the counter tops - but he stayed on top and kept us abreast. His team that worked on site was fantastic and did a thorough job with least intrusion. Neil also ensure that our old kitchen could stay functional till very late. The kitchen was completed more or less on time and was absolutely fantastic - exactly to design - & met our requirements to the tee. Now, months after the kitchen was completed, we continue to enjoy cooking in our new space and are absolutely delighted to have gone with Against the Grain / Neil. Neil also worked with us to redesign the old kitchen space into a new spare room and delivered on the design as well as on the fit. Dan from his team worked on the spare room build and there is nothing we can say that does justice to his absolute brilliant work. Neil also designed and delivered a bespoke wardrobe in another room to very specific requirements. He came up with excellent ideas to our requirement and also sourced and delivered the right product. We also came to know Neil as a person during this time and we have had several interesting conversations with him. He is an absolute delight to do business with - we highly recommend Neil and Against the grain.

Exceptional from beginning to end. I went to see Neil as a frame of reference for when I went to see the big store designers. Not only was he the nicest, most helpful and genuine person, but there was not one thing that was seen as a 'fudge' or a 'oh we can't fit that in there' as there was with all the main stores. I felt everywhere else I went I was being asked to compromise and decide on what to sacrifice and what to keep. Neil was able to give me exactly what I asked for without any issues at all. He came up with a beautiful, functional design and Dan and Ben came to visit the kitchen before I got a quote. So the guys actually doing the work got to see the place and quote realistically rather than an in store designer quoting on behalf of an installer. It really worried me that with any other company I went to the installers wouldn't see the peculiarities of my building until the day they turned up to start working so it was really reassuring to have them visit beforehand to plan what they needed to do and how they could do it. Throughout the whole process I was consulted to confirm exactly what I wanted. I felt like I was their only customer and the service was outstanding. They put up with all my silly questions and the fact my kitchen was an odd shape/ size and totally random. They were the only ones to offer to fully re do the kitchen. Rather than removing the old kitchen and sticking the new one in around the poor building work that was already there, they made everything right. Not one part of the job was skimped on. I would recommend them in a heartbeat, there was not one thing that I wasn't happy with.
