   We've done our fair share of city walking tours, ghost walks and historical rambles, but the Shiverpool experience in Liverpool — particularly the crypt tour that culminates in the Death House beneath the church — genuinely exceeded every expectation. From start to finish this isn’t just a ghost walk or a bit of spooky entertainment; it’s a carefully constructed blend of immersive theatre, rich local history, dark humour and genuinely atmospheric locations that stays with you long after the tour ends. The evening begins outside the courthouse at the Queen Victoria statue, a place most people pass without a second thought. Almost immediately, the guides set the tone. They’re performers as much as historians — engaging, sharp, and perfectly judged. From the outset it’s clear this won’t be a passive experience of being talked at; you’re being drawn into a story that unfolds as you move through the city. As the tour progresses, Liverpool’s past is revealed layer by layer. The history isn’t sanitised or simplified — it’s messy, grim in places, and fascinating throughout. Disease, poverty, superstition and forgotten lives are woven into the streets themselves. The guides don’t just recite facts; they inhabit the stories, adjusting their delivery to the group and the moment. There’s a brilliant balance between humour and tension, with moments of levity giving way to something much darker as the night deepens. What really elevates the experience is how rooted it feels in place. Streets you’ve walked countless times suddenly feel unfamiliar once you understand what happened there. Doorways, alleyways and buildings become anchors for stories that many locals — our group included — had never heard before. The final section of the tour leads to Our Lady & St Nicholas Church, where the experience shifts into something heavier. Descending beneath the church into the crypt — and ultimately the Death House — is genuinely powerful. The change in atmosphere is immediate: cooler air, heavier silence, and a sense of stepping into a space that carries real historical weight. This isn’t a gimmick or a haunted house setup; it’s an authentic location treated with respect and intelligence. The Death House section is exceptionally well done. The acting and narration are restrained but deeply effective, allowing the setting to speak for itself. There are no cheap shocks — instead, tension builds slowly as you’re guided through what this place was used for and the realities of life and death in the city’s past. What impressed us most is how confidently Shiverpool walks the line between education and entertainment. You come away having genuinely learned something, without ever feeling like you’ve sat through a lecture. There’s a real respect for Liverpool’s history running through the entire experience. From a practical point of view, everything is well handled. The pacing is comfortable, the group is managed smoothly, and the guides are clearly experienced in keeping everyone engaged and at ease. By the time you emerge back into the night air, there’s a strong sense that you’ve shared something memorable. If you’re looking for a way to experience Liverpool beyond the obvious landmarks — something atmospheric, informative and genuinely immersive — this tour is outstanding.

   Chose the ghost walking tour. Worried it might be boring, but it was far from that. A history of the area with famous ghost stories delivered in a very theatrical and fun way. Thoroughly recommend this to anyone visiting Liverpool. It is a long walk however. Though my husband, who is less able, did manage to find a couple of places to sit when we stopped. Paid extra to have the map and pin badge which I thought was worth it. The pin badges were really good quality and a lot of information was given in the maps. A great keepsake.

   We had a brilliant time with Shiverpool Tours, on their Hope Street Shivers tour, Lots of fun, laughter and ghost stories about the city. The two guides Chilla Black and Mary Coffin, were amazing! Made the evening special!

   We greatly enjoyed our Shiverpool tour. It was great learning about the fascinating but sometimes not so pleasant history of Liverpool. There is more significant history to this city than I expected. Our trip into the depths of the St James Cemetery beside the huge gothic Anglican Cathedral gave us a few spine tingling chills. Our guide was very knowledgeable and presented the tales in a theatrical and very entertaining way. They had us laughing throughout and we were all captured by the stories they told. We would recommend the tour to anyone who is interested in ghost stories but also learning about the history of the city. We had our 11 year old son with us and he really enjoyed it too and it wasn’t too scary for him.

   Out on the Hope St tour with Chilla Black - it was a great experience, Chilla knew exactly how to handle the group and their humour and how to handle passersby. What I thought was going to be a long and dull tour ended up being the best walking tour I've been on to date

   Thoroughly enjoyed the theatrical Shiverpool Hope Street Ghost tour. The Georgian Quarter is beautiful to walk around and it was fascinating to learn about the ghoulish history on some of Liverpool's oldest streets. All the guides were fantastic storytellers, bringing the tales to life. The main guide, Chiller Black was hilarious, knowledgeable and effortlessly entertaining using the public and surroundings to enhance the experience. We never stopped laughing, but that's not to say we didn't get the chills. St James' Cemetery was partially eerie and atmospheric with old stone etchings, real bats flying around and some jump scares thrown in. We loved it and will defo book another one. Thank you.

   Definitely one of my favorite tours ever. We were charmed to discover the dark and mysterious history of Liverpool on this spooky and sometimes comical ramble through her streets. I expected to be entertained which I was, bit I also came away with a deeper appreciation of this city's history. Beguiled by a guide that might have been a little bit less than sane, it gets a bit edgy when you don't know what's coming around the next corner, and often . . . you don't.
