Awful, awful, awful! Months of leaks, bursts, low/no supply, bills went up and vulnerable households with no updates and no water. Disgusting. MP was interested for all of 2 minutes. No updates, no refunds, no apologies.

I honestly don’t know where to begin with United Utilities. My annual water bill has just jumped from £311 to £395 for a single person living alone in a studio flat. Outrageous. I first tried to raise an online complaint, but surprise, their website kept “failing” every single time—forcing me to call them directly. On the phone, I explained the obvious: I was furious about the sudden increase. For context, two years ago I already wasted an entire day waiting for them to install a water meter, only for them to fail. Their “solution” at the time was: you’ll pay £20 a month. Now suddenly it’s £395 a year. That’s not a bill—it’s daylight robbery. The agent I spoke to gave me the usual corporate excuse about “massive investments to reduce leaks in the network”. I cut her off straight away, because let’s be real: by their own admission, they underinvested for decades while never once lowering bills. Consumers like me have already been paying for this water all along, yet now we’re being forced to bankroll their “catch-up investments” twice—once through taxes, and again through skyrocketing bills. Heads they win, tails we lose. They told me someone would call me back. Two days later, the phone rang. If I thought their customer service was bad before, this call confirmed it’s the worst I’ve ever experienced. I picked up quickly as I was busy, but looking back, the entire conversation was insulting. The guy on the line clearly didn’t care, parroting the same nonsense about “investments”. Then he claimed to be “conducting an investigation over the phone”—asking a series of pointless questions about my water usage and household equipment. I explained, truthfully, that I have no washing machine, no dishwasher, no bathtub, and that I’m extremely careful with water use. And then came the punchline: “Based on my investigation, you should actually be paying £470.” I stayed silent just to avoid exploding. He then had the audacity to ask if I wanted to “continue the complaint at the new price.” What an absolute scam. At that point I gave up, because this wasn’t customer service—it was a deliberate racket. A well-oiled system designed to shut down complaints and squeeze every last penny from people who have no choice but to pay. And of course, the cherry on top: this is the glorious result of water privatisation—being trapped in a monopoly run by private vultures. United Utilities isn’t just incompetent. They re a disgrace.
