   Former medieval watch tower located on Chester City Walls not far from the cathedral. The imposing tower was originally part of the city's defences, but by the 17th century was being leased to the city's guilds to raise revenue for upkeep. Today it provides a point of interest for wall walkers, with an information board provided to explain its history.

   Located on the north-eastern side of the city walls. There are a series of steps leading up to the entrance to King Charles Tower. Although entrance to within the tower itself is not permitted, you do get a good view from atop the stairs leading up.

   In my opinion this is the most beautiful of the towers on the city walls. It looks particularly dramatic when viewed from the canal below. The tower gets its name from the popular belief that King Charles I watched from here as his army was defeated at the Battle of Rowton Moor in 1645. The tower has rarely been open when I've visited though on one occasion I did get to see an exhibition of Roman archaeology here. There's a viewing platform in front of the tower but if you climb the steps to the first floor entrance you will get an even more spectacular view of the cathedral and its green, the canal and the city - that is if the gate is not locked!
