My experience with this practice has been okay overall, but the biggest issue is trying to actually get an appointment. It always seems to be “no availability for two weeks” — and strangely, it’s consistently two weeks every time, never 7 days, 10 days, or 21 days. It definitely makes you wonder what’s going on with their booking system. When you finally do get seen, the doctors themselves are great. They’re helpful, take the time to listen, look into your symptoms properly, and arrange any tests or follow-ups needed. No complaints there. The frustration really lies with the admin side. Reception can feel unhelpful at times, and you’re often asked to justify things like blood test bookings, even when they’ve been requested by the doctor. It sometimes feels like the reception team are acting as gatekeepers rather than just helping you access care. Overall, once you’re in the room with a doctor, the care is good — but the process of getting there needs serious improvement.

I phoned just 2 days ago at 8am, explaining that I received a bite from a stray cat while travelling outside of Europe, and had already received the first shot for rabies vaccine in the country I was staying few days prior to returning to Scotland and the call to the gp, and needed to receive the rest of the vaccine shots. I phoned explaining that I was POST EXPOSURE and I must continue with the shots, as rabies are a serious and irreversible risk if the full course of vaccine is not administered. After listening to me, the receptionist replied that they DON’T do it. I accepted that answer thinking I was supposed to look somewhere else for help. Turned out I spent 8 hours that day calling from 111, Minor Injuries, A&E, hospitals receptions, pharmacies. Nobody on the phone could help, and everyone was saying to call someone else. I contacted again the gp a second time that day around 3.30pm, again explaining I was already exposed, and needed a post exposure vaccine. This time the receptionist told me that it was too late, and the doctor could do a referral the following day, but it would be in 2 weeks. Bare in mind, when receiving rabies vaccine post exposure, the shots must be adminstered on set days, so my following shot was supposed to be on the next day of the call. I explained the receptionist I needed to receive the shot the following day, as per medical treatment, and this matter couldn’t wait 2 weeks. They replied only with “this is the procedure”. No doctor contacted me on the following day to give me a referral from this gp. Luckily I got a call back from a doctor, after contacting the A&E at the WGH. The doctor explained the gp should have given me the referral, and they apologised because I shouldn’t have to contact, but the gp. They added that they lack training, to not know how to handle these situations, and not being aware of what health risk they are putting the patients through. Thanks to the WGH doctor who called me, I finally got my appointments for the rest of the vaccine shots. On the Lothian NHS website, regarding vaccine post exposure, it is your gp who MUST give you a referral for the shots. To say that the reception has FAILED completely to help with this is the least, lacking knowledge and to not allow me to get through a doctor is unbelievably unprofessional and a serious risk for health. I read a lot of bad reviews on here, but I don’t think they ever read these comments, and they don’t have a complaint form on their website. I’m sharing my experience, so that hopefully nobody goes through the fear of the rabies, and not getting medical help to receive the vaccine shots. What a disgusting experience, when you are supposed to be helped, but you have to go through receptionists that don’t even understand what you are talking about because they are not trained and they should not be put at the front desk. There are a lot of people complaining about you, but it seems nobody takes action. So people be aware and look out for your health, because unfortunately there are very unprofessional people that can decide for your life.

Very soon after I registered with the practice, I required emergency surgery that has had long-lasting complications. Everyone at the practice, and particularly Dr. Gisu Cooper, has been incredible in taking my issues seriously, liaising with my surgeons, and making sure that I get the medical help that I need. I cannot recommend them all highly enough!

I arrived a wee bit early and the doctor called me in early. Dr Anderson was very friendly and professional and made me feel completely at ease. His trainee Dr was also very polite and attentive. A lovely visit. Thank you.

My experience has always been good: Dr Cooper, nurses, ladies at the reception. Thank you all. It was an emergency yesterday. And everything went well. Back phone call(Dr Robert), an appointment with Dr Dominic, valuable pieces of advice, referral to the hospital. I am grateful.

The best GP care I have ever received. Compassionate, understanding, and responsive. I feel truly listened to and involved in decisions about my care, and actions such as referrals are followed up on promptly. Reception staff are also excellent. They have made a real positive impact on my life after having some bad experiences with other GPs. Great online appointment and prescription service, and I can always get through on the phone. I don't understand how anybody has given a bad review. There is one nurse I ask not to see because her bedside manner leaves me feeling told off and anxious, but every other person at the practice has been patient, kind, and clear.

Honestly, I've never received the help I needed with LEITH Surgery. I've learnt to NOT rely on medical attention from them and the receptionists are just people sent from hell. You can never get passed them to see a real doctor. I can write a whole essay on how bad leith surgery is despite having good doctors...

The employees here are fantastic! In my experience they have never been busy but registering as a new patient took a little while however the people who work at reception do their hardest to accommodate a lot of people. A little bit of kindness is needed in this world and always treat the staff with respect.
