The recent, dramatic increase in self-service tills at Tesco Thornbury is appalling and I'm certain was done without consulting customers! I don't know anyone who enjoys this form of checkout - it's best suited to those paying cash for just a few items, not a full grocery shop. The elderly in particular loathe self service tills, and Thornbury has a large elderly population. Clearly Tesco prioritises lowering its staff numbers/costs, over providing a good service for customers! There is now a tiny number of conventional, manned checkouts, and they inevitably jam up at peak times. Christmas shopping will not be fun! Stock is poorly managed at the Thornbury Tesco - newly launched food products don't appear on the shelves until long after they've ceased to be new, if at all. The management doesn't have their finger on the pulse of the latest products, and zero interest in ordering them/making them available to their customers in a timely fashion. I've had to order various new items online, because they never arrive at my local Tesco, Thornbury - eg the latest in the 'Heck' pork range (including Heck sausage rashers), and the new OXO Stock Powders (which come in three different flavours, none of which can be found at Tesco, Thornbury). I've mentioned such missing items to staff in the past and asked them to pass my comments to the manager, to no avail. I believe this store is in desperate need of less self service tills, and more proactive management!

The staff is very polite and helps others. Many times when I buy something from here, it takes me a lot of time to find some things but the staff here helps me and they have been very helpful for me.Or this is good for new people because it helps them in finding their things. It was a very good experience for me. Big parking space

There are a number of long-running issues with this store: (i) frequent lack of stock, especially for fresh fruit and veg, (ii) items with very short use by dates, often 1 day and rarely discounted, and (iii) many items significantly more expensive than Tesco’s closer to Bristol owing to lack of local competition. However, the particular “innovation” in this store which has led me to write this review is the significant expansion of self-service tills. Recently half of the tills for trolleys were converted to self-service. While I can see that self-service might speed up paying for a small basket of items it is obviously slower and less efficient for a trolley full of items compared to a trained cashier. I can only conclude this change was made to force customers to shop in a manner which reduces their staffing irrespective of whether it is convenient or efficient for the customer. Thornbury really deserves better supermarket options.

Usually between 10am-3pm at least 3 people waiting for food to be scanned and paid for. Queues to use the selfcheckout and not as full as most tescos. Still a good place- not always the cheapest but decent quality

Oh dear what has happened at Tesco. I should start by saying that the staff are fantastic, very helpful and friendly. But there are so many things with the store itself. Firstly the stock levels are terrible, you often can't find things in stock (occasionally really obvious stuff like eggs). When the heatwave was here there was no ice cream (see point 2). Apparently they don't stock the shelves overnight like they used to. Result empty shelves Secondly, the freezers are always breaking down. So often there is very little frozen produce that you can buy. During the heatwave the freezers were mostly non functional - so no ice cream (what an opportunity cost). Apparently the store is 25 years old and the freezers will be replaced in January (let's hope they don't break down over Christmas or we could be without Turkey) Thirdly (this one affects all Tesco stores). When we have very heavy rain, the roof leaks. This seems to be a problem with lots of Tesco stores. Tesco made enough profit during the pandemic, the least they could do is spend some money on the store; and they really need to sort their stock levels out (I now have to shop elsewhere to get plenty of what I consider normal products because they're no longer stocked or out of stock).

can no longer be trusted for frozen food. I have had food that has clearly thawed and been refrozen. staff can be seen either emptying or re filling the freezers as they break down. Tesco said was originally due to hot weather but the problems are deeper. New freezers due in Jan 23 I am told. till then I will get my frozen food elsewhere. Thornbury deserves better!

Good if you only want the more expensive alternative! They haven't had Redmere Farms grapes for weeks but given that they were advertised as being on offer this week I thought I'd give it a go. No, nothing. You can have Tesco grapes for £2 / 500g but not Redmere Farms at £0.69! Oh well back to Aldi
