Myself and my partner used Howells to purchase our first home. We were very happy with the service we received, all staff were extremely friendly and responsive - we would definitely recommend Howells to family and friends in the future.
We used Howells Solicitors (Caerphilly) for conveyancing in 2013 and 2017, and had a great experience both times. We then tried using them in 2021, but they seemed quite slow and sometimes didn't reply to emails/call back when they said they would (we knew generally about COVID delays in 2021, so we specifically asked if they had any capacity issues before hiring them, and they said they had no issues). So while their staff were friendly, it was disappointing to have quite a slow/delayed transaction regardless of us asking. A week ago, I then emailed Howells Newport (and 3 other firms) for a conveyancing quote. I had a very quick reply from the other 3 firms, but no reply at all from Howells Newport. Overall, my experience with Howells in 2021 and 2023 has therefore been much worse than my 2013 and 2017 experiences.
We were under Jo’s team for conveyancing for a recent home purchase. They were good communicators throughout and always let us know asap of any changes or abnormalities highlighted. Their defining moment was on the day of the planned exchange. This was due to be pushed back by our buyers, awaiting issues with paperwork and their solicitor. We contacted Jo’s team and informed them we were going to have to push the exchange and completion dates forward reluctantly if exchange could not be sorted that day, as we had to pay the movers deposit the same day. We were given a clear plan on what they were going to do and when we would be contacted, and dead on the clock, they rang with updates, and we were able to successfully exchange within a few hours of telling them our issue. We were so grateful it was all sorted that day and commend their commitment to ensure our move date would not be changed. Would recommend solely on the performance from that day!

A very poor experience. They seem to have gone downhill a lot since we used them for conveyancing five years ago. Their customer care is non existent. They still seem to hide behind Covid (April 2022) for not having face to face meetings with clients. It wasn't easy to speak to anyone in Jen's team. We were blocked by the receptionist every time. The quote for doing the work was unreliable with significant extra charges appearing in the final bill. When challenged they pointed to their T&C's on the website and said they didn't have the time to prepare detailed quotes. I would not recommend them now. I felt as though I wasn't important enough for them to bother communicating with me properly. If you are looking for conveyancing work to be done try a small local firm who are interested and willing to talk to their clients.
We had an absolutely excellent service by Howells at Newport. We were handled by Jen's Team, but the whole company were great. I can't recommend Jen and Jessica enough. Great advice with clear, consistent and understandable information. 5*
