   While the barn cinema is situated in a lovely location in Dartington hall, it is a shame that the staff obviously don't hold this 'cinema' to the standard which it deserves. Before our film started the audience was reminded to be quiet at all times. This was obviously a struggle for some members of the audience who decided to have their weekly natter throughout the film. I promptly notified the staff and to my suprise I was asked if I would like to move instead of them dealing with the issue directly. Naturally I refused this as I wanted to sit in the seats which I had chosen. The lady who was acting as a steward then frustratingly reminded me how annoying it is when people talk during film screenings, the very issue which I had raised to her! I was then assured a steward would deal with this issue but my trust in this steward (who neither myself or my partner saw or heard) fell through as the audience continued their in-depth conversation. Cinema is all about escapism and suspended reality, however, this is impossible at the barn cinema. Furthermore, there is a serious lack of attention to how the room sounds in the cinema. The audio is played out of tiny speakers in a stereo format. This paired with the lack of sound deadening (in a stone hall may I add) left me unable to understand dialogue in key scenes. Overall, if you're looking for an immersive cinema experience your money is best spent somewhere else. A real shame for a location with such great potential to bring the big screen to this quiet corner of Devon.

   UPDATE JULY 24th 2025: Great news, the cinema is getting a new projector and sound system, so I changed my rating to 4 stars! Now all we need are seats that have a bit more leg room. Original review: Great setting, decent projection and sound, but there are some broken green pixels on the screen that are super distracting. This should have been fixed long ago. I watched Baz Luhrman’s Elvis here a couple of years ago and noticed the problem then, and it STILL hasn’t been fixed.

   It's a gorgeous cinema and because of it's location and quality surroundings the clientele seem to be just that little bit more respectful of those around them. I've yet to see a mobile phone screen lit up during the performance or loud food being consumed ! Yes it's more expensive than a vue cinema but then shouldn't watching a movie be a fulfilling experience and not a ' hey man can you keep the noise down deal ' ?
