Great local boozer always a friendly welcome and log burner roaring away.Pub doesn't do food but full of characters and tourists of the canal, a right little gem of a pub x

The man behind the bar wouldn’t stop whining about how he doesn’t have enough customers these days. He followed us to the garden where we went to smoke and he just kept on complaining. That and the group of teenagers drinking there was super awkward.

Usually 3 local ales made by the owner, outdoor seating area

A welcoming atmosphere and some really well kept real ales are waiting for visitors here. The music was worth noting for reflecting great taste and being played at a sensible level to enjoy without drowning conversation. Will be going back. So I've been back twice now and last night had a pint of the NPA and APA from the nearby Newport Brewery. Both were excellent, but the NPA is the show stealer here. There was a Black IPA on sale when we arrived, but this was taken off before I had a chance to try it. The Boss, Harvey, explained that the beer had been tapped for some time and he was worried that it was close to expiry, but he would let me have a drop to try. I returned from a visit outside for a small cigar to find an almost full pint of black beer at the table where our wives were sat. It was in good condition and was a credit to the landlord that he'd taken it off to avoid any potential dissatisfaction, but I enjoyed it very much. Later in the evening Harvey joined us at our table as the customer numbers had dropped, so we had a good chinwag about this area which is still new to us but was home to him. In all, it was another lovely visit to a 'proper' pub. By that I mean it's not a restaurant, it's a drinkers' pub where the people are varied and eclectic, the noise is loud but good humoured and customers are treated with value. Should you find yourself in MD with a bit of a thirst, I'd recommend it above all of the others.
