I instructed Max Engel & Co to handle what should have been a straightforward Section 21 possession claim. Instead, I was met with complacency, poor preparation, and a complete lack of legal leadership. The solicitor failed to identify or prepare for a key clause in the tenancy agreement, which the judge ended up raising in court. Their court representative was unprepared, deferred to Shelter guidance instead of case law, and outright refused to argue the legal point. I had to step in and speak on behalf of my own legal team, an experience I wouldn’t wish on anyone. After the case was dismissed, I was forced to research the law myself and present the legal argument back to the firm, including case law they should have cited. Despite this, they refused to accept responsibility, offered a token 20% discount, and ultimately expected me to pay again for work they had already failed to do correctly the first time. Their complaints process is equally disheartening, dismissive, defensive, and determined to deny accountability. If their handling of my case is truly “the best they can do,” they should not be in practice. That line, astonishingly, came from the managing partner, Helen Carville, who personally conducted the internal investigation, and of course, found no fault with her own firm. Avoid this firm like the plague. Everyone deserves better.

Our family company has received excellent service from Sara Lawson @ Max Engel over the last 8 months or so. Sara has acted for us in relation to a lease renewal and the sale of some development land. In both cases, the solicitors on the otherside were not the easiest to deal with but Sara kept her cool (when her clients were starting to lose theirs!) & persevered to achieve the outcome we wanted. Very level headed with lots of common sense and considerable experience of complex property transactions, Sara is a breath of fresh air to deal with. Increasingly these days we find solicitors trying to renegotiate terms already agreed between the parties which can be extremely frustrating when trying to get a deal done - Sara doesn't do this - she listens to what it is we have agreed, what our objectives are and then works hard to achieve those objectives in line with the instructions we have given. Although Sara's works part time hours in the office as she juggles two demanding roles of Solicitor and Mum, never have we felt we receive a part time service. What her "out of office" hours message fails to say is that she frequently logs back in to her computer in the evenings and continues working. On our most recent transaction she went the extra mile for us and worked over the weekend as well which was very much appreciated. We highly recommend Sara and will continue to use her in the future.
