On my first day I wasn’t sure who was a parent and who was a staff member. When dropping off the children; everyone was almost hurded into one room which was very overwhelming for my (at the time 2 year old son). There was no introduction to staff at all - no uniform or guidance as to what to do or where things were. I found myself asking for names and where to put coats. After a while the room became more quiet and there was a few children and another mother her child with myself and my son in the main room. An older child (I say this as she was much taller) came over and strangled my son (who at 2, was one of the youngest). If I wasn’t there I dread to think what would have happened because the little girl wouldn’t let go of my son until I firmly told her to get off - there was no staff in the room at this point, they were in the garden or in the kitchen area. On the first week a tall lady with dark hair came around the room with a register. We was talking to the only member of staff we knew as we had attended stay and play prior signing up to the nursery, when the tall lady approached us and said “euurrghhh, whos that?”, referring to my child. My son was crying due to the overwhelming crowds and his first time being away from me. The women taking the registers manner seemed liked she didn’t like children (this lady seemed to go into the office near Reception, not sure of her name) and she had a long cardigan on. I need to point out that the stay and play lady is lovely; this was the reason i chose the nursery initially. Sadly the lady who did the stay and play sessions (I won’t mention her name ) had to have time off for personal reasons. My son just would not settle and cried even more in her absence. I wasn’t sure what to do - was this just typical behaviour when sending your child to nursery? I was after all a first time mother too. I continued sending my son in for the term, he cried every time & didn’t want to go in. They referred to my son by a shortened name despite me addressing his proper name; this shortened name was also written on the online portal and lead to other children also calling him the shortened name. He would come home saying my name is this not that. Accident forms were shredded (as was mentioned by his key worker) when I requested a copy because of bruises. Some accidents were not mentioned until days after or until I called to question bruises or marks, on his face. Accident forms that I did see beforehand were written in pencil, all of which seem to have vanished. I did mention it to the headteacher; the response suggested it was my son’s fault he was slipping, and having accidents quite frequently… his limb length contributed to him slipping off a garden equipment/toy more then once. I went to the doctors and he never slipped or tripped whilst at the doctors, so his core seemed fine - contradicting the suggestion. After the beginning of the second term I did not feel confident sending my son back to the nursery as I feel there is a lack of supervision and poor organisation. Whilst the stay and play lady did come back and my son did feel more settled. When she wasn’t there it was the same issues. The head said this case was a one off - but on the first day of nursery a lady mentioned her son falling at the nursery and having a bruised bloody face when she came to collect him… she still has no idea what happened. I still don’t have answers as to why my son kept slipping and tripping either or for the bruises. When I would pick up my son you could hear the accidents certain kids had and they seemed to be the same equipment. Parents in the area have a limited choice of nurseries that will accommodate the hours funded; this is why many come here. This is what many parents have stated to myself. The nursery needs looking at before a serious incident happens. I gave two stars because of the stay and play lady; they need more staff like her. She genuinely cares for the children.

The current team of staff at Ashgate Nursery are amazing. I had the pleasure of working there for a short time and would recommend it to anyone looking for Nursery care in the area. The staff really engage the children in the activities which are child led and based around the interests they have. The quality of care by the staff is wonderful and the children really engage in their learning because they are in charge of it. The learning of the children is monitored accurately and the children progress well because the staff make sure activities are tailored to the children.

A fantastic nursery with fantastic staff. Everyone is so friendly and do an amazing job with the children. All the teachers have the upto date training and involve the parents in everything they are achieving with the child. My son attends the willows room and the staff in there are fantastic and really helped my son come out of his shell. They also help with any additional support for you child and point you in the right direction for additional support available. I would recommend ashgate to anyone wanting a great nursery with great staff.
