   Avoid this firm! They knowingly violated the terms of a Will, as proven by the Legal Ombudsman. Acted with a clear conflict of interest. Were not impartial. Showed considerable bias against a vulnerable, elderly beneficiary, intentionally depriving her of her inheritance. Caused eight years of immeasurable anxiety, stress & frustration with their stonewalling on one hand, and adversarial attacks on the other. Legal Ombudsman took on the case and judged against them due to all the hard evidence. The ‘diverted’ money from the Estate has not been recovered. However, the firm did at least pay the compensation remedy as ordered by the Ombudsman. If you can cope with all the reading, the legal ombudsman’s decision has been published in full as a category one public interest case. Read item PID-002, titled Wills & probate which you’ll find by looking at the Legal Ombudsman under Information Centre then Public Interest Decisions. I hope this review helps to save someone else from suffering as we have.

   Learn from our experience and avoid this Firm at all costs. I have not dealt with all of this firm’s staff, but I certainly cannot speak disparagingly enough of the Firms Wills and Probate department, or of its senior partner. In their administration of an estate benefitting my Gran, for whom I acted as one of three LPA’s, the firm intentionally failed to distribute the estate in accordance with the will, instead showing partiality towards other beneficiaries and thus depriving an elderly, vulnerable client (who has since passed) of their inheritance. Further, the firm failed even to keep accurate accounts. They failed to deal with our complaint internally, choosing instead to ignore pretty much all of our communications with them for several years. A very long investigation by the Legal Ombudsman has eventually exposed the extent of the firm’s failings, defining it as a ‘category one public interest case’, The full details of which can be found on the Legal Ombudsman website under the information centre and public interest decisions. Although the firm has paid the financial remedy as instructed by the ombudsman, the original money has not been recovered, leading to significant financial loss. If you value your assets, your time and your sanity, avoid this firm at all costs. In my opinion, those responsible should not be allowed to continue practicing.

   Had the misfortune of being in a chain with this solicitors. They held the process up at several key points, to such a level that we lost our mortgage offer and are now paying an extra 50% on our monthly mortgage payments (in pure interest!) because interest rates went up dramatically between us starting the purchase process and when we finally completed. As I understand it, this only happened because the solicitor handling the chain at Underwoods was on holiday and simply refused to complete the sale, despite offers from the rest of the chain to cover the cost of bringing in someone in their absence to complete. If/when my family struggles to pay bills or make payments over the next few years, given that we’re in a cost of living crisis and the fact that we’re now paying an extra £400 a month in interest on our mortgage, I will be thinking of Underwoods and hoping that the solicitor’s holiday was pleasant.
