   Absolutely incompetent. Rude, sarcastic and the most unprofessional precise I’ve ever witnessed. James Clayton gave me incorrect advice on my tax position, and was adamant even when shown information to the contrary. I had to converse with HMRC directly before he would listen to anything I was trying to convey. Then no apology or thanks, (why I was having to find out this information when paying an accountant is beyond me). I chased weeks later, with some minor queries. This was met with lazy responses- one word answers, links copies and pasted with no explanation or elaboration. If I asked what was meant, Mr.Clayton would reply “I’ll do it next week”..Which was 2 weeks and arrived on 5pm on a Friday. Which he threatened to do again, reason unknown. For some reason asking him to complete the task he was paid to do (months previous) was exasperating for Mr.Clayton, who became more and more rude once he’d been paid. Personally id be mortified to have taken someone’s money and continue to drag my heels, not to mention be so rude. I also received bizarre and inappropriate emails, with excuses to have still not done my return such as he’d been on a long trip and had car trouble. Mr.Clayton seems to enjoy playing up to the hapless dad character, although I’m unsure what this has to do with his business. He felt the need to tell his clients that he was taking personal days to “polish onions with his feet”. Not very reassuring when they’re dealing with something as important as your tax. An embarrassment. In short, avoid. Doesn’t deserve the custom.

   James and his team at Dead Simple Accounting are amazing and I felt very well looked after from the start. As an artist trying to juggle a day job with my art practice, I really needed support with sorting out my first tax return and to have someone answer my many questions on the whole process. While I haven't felt particularly reassured speaking to other accountants previously, it was immediately different with James - I decided to contact him after seeing all the positive reviews. He patiently answered all my queries and made everything really straightforward and easy to understand. He also responds to emails very quickly and is just lovely and genuinely nice to work with. I also like that he understands creatives and has helped me work through my start-up costs and found me a rebate! I would happily recommend James and his team if you want peace of mind with your accounts and tax returns!
