I did all levels of animal care (Intro-HND). Good stepping stone for getting into degree level courses or for animal care assistant jobs, but horrible experience overall. Way more stress than would usually be necessary for an HND level qualification due to the toxic environment. Some of the animal welfare at the Animal Care Unit was questionable. Nothing horrifying, but as SRUC teaches best practice it should be embodying best practice. Some of this has now been addressed, but could've and should've been sorted out far sooner. For example, when I first started studying at SRUC, the rabbits were all housed individually rather than bonded together, and there was no covering on the wire mesh floor of the chinchilla accommodation to protect their feet. There was some unprofessional behaviour from some of the staff towards the students - some of it would enter bullying territory in my opinion. You could definitely tell some students were disliked by certain members of staff. One of the lecturers will shout across the room to students to try and embarrass them and make an example of them. Another lecturer is notoriously snarky towards students and is quite poor at teaching in my opinion - a higher proportion of students seemed to fail their classes than any other classes. I mostly relied on online learning resources to pass their classes as the teaching materials were inadequate. Another lecturer's gave us learning materials directly copied and pasted from the book Veterinary Nursing for Exotic Pets and Wildlife (with no acknowledgement or credit to the author). Seemingly no protocol for what constitutes a valid reason to miss class and what doesn't - it's generally up to the discretion of the lecturer. I had a test booked, which I notified staff of in advance, and was threatened with an automatic fail for my first attempt because an assessment took place that day (my test was booked long before the assessment date was announced, and I don't think I'd taken a single absence before that day). Just overall quite a chaotic and hostile environment for a qualification that I otherwise found quite straightforward (and one that SHOULD be enjoyable for students that are interested in animals!)

A lovely place in the countryside. We were followed around the garden by a very friendly robin!

Scotland's Rual College Aberdeen campus is located on the Craibstone Estate. Easy to get to and from the campus. It is stone's throw away from the airport and about 5 miles from the centre of the City of Aberdeen. Plenty of parking spaces. #sruc, #aberdeen, #scotland, #campus, #college, #dyce, #studyinaberdeen, #craibstoneestate, #fergusonbuilding,, #craibstone, #craibstonestate
