I was genuinely excited to discover how well the rooms above Jolly Sailor are working. The accommodation managed by Clarence Quarters has now been running for over a year, and the improvement in service and standards is remarkable. The rooms are clean, well presented, and thoughtfully maintained. The staff are helpful and welcoming, and despite the character of an older building, everything functions exactly as it should. What really elevates the stay, though, is the stunning seafront view — waking up to the sea makes it a genuine pleasure to stay there. Downstairs in the pub, I’m very happy to say that since Chris returned as chef, the food quality has improved dramatically. We recently held a Christmas staff party there, and the food was excellent — my steak in particular was outstanding. This is a place that really shouldn’t be overlooked. It’s probably one of the very few pubs right on the seafront in Portsmouth, and it’s perfect for celebrations, gatherings, or simply a great evening out. Add to that the consistently great live music — the band on the night was amazing — and you have a venue that truly stands out. A big thank you to Chris and Ross for creating and sustaining such a fantastic space. It’s always a pleasure to be there, and I’d wholeheartedly recommend it.

I hired this venue as a leaving party for moving abroad, we booked through the manager at the time who was great but left unexpectedly. The owner did not let us know about this and no one had contacted us about planning our booking. We were told we had the venue from 11 am, so we told guests to come from 1pm as it was a sunny weekend. The beers on tap had mostly gone and the fridges with beer were broken, so there were only two beers available, one of which tasted strange. Spirits and wine were also low or out and we were told by staff that the manager didn’t put a stock order in despite there being two events on this weekend. When we arrived on the day, we also had to clean up the venue ourselves. We ordered food and many of the items on the menu did not arrive, meaning we had too little food and poor alcohol choice. The bar staff and DJ were lovely throughout and made the event bearable, but the owner caused incredible amounts of stress through his poor communication. When we emailed to complain, we were ignored for weeks on end and every phone call either didn’t get picked up or the owner was “busy”. We eventually received a small “good will” refund, but absolutely no recognition nor apology for the incredibly poor showing and management from the owner. Do not host an event at this venue unless you want to be disappointed.

Popped in whilst attending victorious festival, we have been to this establishment a fair few times and always enjoyed ourselves. Bar staff were efficient and polite, nice festival menu on offer.

My friends and I came here for the quiz night on Wednesday. We were welcomed with friendly staff. The service and attentiveness on the night was very good. For £3 to enter the quiz, which includes a curry or chips, everyone on my table was satisfied. The quiz itself was fun and good entertainment. Will definitely return & recommend to others.

Poor experience this evening. Band advertised as playing at 8 but still not on when we left at 8.50. Got to the bar at 7.30 on a Saturday evening but they'd sold out of nearly every beer on tap, and didn't even have ice! Waited for ages to be served, which was no fault of the barman who was amazing and doing his best to deal with loads of demands. A pub that offers live music really needs to have enough staff on and a well stocked bar.

We had a red letter day stay for 2 days here, when we arrived they didn't even know we were staying even though it was booked months previously. The carpet in the bedroom was threadbare, we went in December so able to do Xmas shopping so it was freezing and we couldn't even turn the radiator on, the TV had a huge colour bleed all the way through. Meals were stated available from 12 till 9 but when we mentioned coming back later for the food we were told it had to be before six due to Christmas. This was not a major problem but it would have been nice to of been informed.
