Absolutely stunning historical site in Aberdeen shire with breath-taking views of north sea. The dramatic cliff top makes the walk down to the castle well worth the effort. The ruins are well preserved and information boards provide useful insight into the castle's rich Scottish history. Peaceful and perfect for photography and exploration.
An impressive place. Unfortunately, in winter the castle is only open from 10:00 to 15:00. But even from the outside the surrounding landscapes and the castle itself look fantastic. There is a waterfall and caves nearby. On the coast, if you are lucky you can see seals. Although we were not lucky. I recommend taking the coastal path to the nearest town Stonehaven. You will get an unforgettable experience.
Dunnottar Castle is honestly one of the most breathtaking places in Scotland. Perched high on the cliffs above the North Sea, it feels like stepping straight into history. The ruins are full of atmosphere, and the views from every angle are just stunning. The walk down and back up can be a bit steep, but totally worth it for the experience. It’s usually peaceful early in the morning, and watching the waves crash below the castle walls is something you’ll never forget. A must-visit near Stonehaven!
What an amazing castle! Definitely worth the visit. The views are stunning and a great day out. You can walk on opposite hills and get great views of the castle and surrounding monuments. There are a lot of steps to get to the castle, but there are rails and enough passing places when busy. There are no dustbins in the castle, so you need to take your goodies back with you. I would recommend taking some food with, as the gardens are so peaceful, its a great place to have a picnic and enjoy the peace. One of my top 10 castles in Scotland!
We stopped off here on our way to our final holiday destination. It was a school holiday weekday, no space in the car park, but plenty of parking on the road. It's a fab castle to visit, such a great setting, very dramatic on the edge of the cliff. Good photo opportunities and can go down to the stony beach below. You'll need to be able to walk on steep, uneven paths if you want to visit.
this castle is amazing!! there was a lot more to see than I expected. the views looking out to sea are incredible! there's a lot of steps up and down, so it's definitely not accessible at all, but if you can do the stairs I'd definitely recommend you visit!
Dunnottar Castle in Stonehaven is quite possibly one of my favourite castles in Scotland. I’ve made the trip several times from Newport as it is not very far from our family home. It takes a bit of walking to get from the car park to the castle and also to walk around the outside and inside of the castle. I cannot stress this enough. The views are stunning. Since I’ve toured inside the castle before, I like walking up to the castle and exploring the grounds. You simply can not take a bad picture at this castle with the views of the North Sea, the dramatic cliffs and the overall topography. The flora, fauna, waterfalls and soaring and perching birds makes this castle a photographer’s dream. Tourists usually explore the West side of Scotland and then miss the stunning, impressive and breathtaking cliffs of the Aberdeenshire Coastal Trails. If you’re looking for unforgettable and romantic castles that you will never, ever forget, this is the castle for you!
What an amazing piece of Scottish history...outstanding. Great to finally get into it and see around the grounds. Also great to see 8t really busy with tourists. £9.50 for adults and £4.50 for kids aged 5-15... Well worth the money...the views are pretty spectacular also.
Beautiful location that is dog friendly (on short leads). It's a good 10 min walk from the car park to the castle down some steps, . I'm not overly fit and managed it. Just go at your own pace and plenty of opportunity to sit and move out of people's ways, and well worth it. Lovely views from the keep, and very well laid out with just enough information to learn. Staff very friendly and helpful.
Incredible views, really interesting half derelict castle, well worth the walk down and up a load of stairs. We happened to go as part of the Visit Scotland initiative so it was only £3.50 each (student half price) - well worth it. Go on a good weather day, or wear appropriate clothing because it is very exposed with no shelter.
