Absolutely 0 stars for service here. So a disaster from start to finish. After waiting ages, over 5 minutes, at the "wait here to be seated area" for a table I was moved out of the way by waiting staff rather than being asked if I needed help. I had to approach staff near the bar to actually get assistance. This is at 5pm. Then order a coke zero as the waitress has no idea what cider they stock... I mean can't be too hard surely? They deliver diet coke - I pointed out I asked for zero only to be told I had misheard her and they don't stock coke zero.... Then a different waitress gets an order for coke zero at another table and they do have coke zero!! I mean Malmasion do you not train your waiting staff to know what drinks you have or, instead of moving customers out of the way ask if they want to spend money in your restaurants... And I was looking forward to the meal as well.

Everything was lovely for myself and three friends for afternoon tea and fizz, from booking directly over the phone, to being shown to our table early and having a drink, being allowed to slightly change the order on the day and the endless supply of tea or coffee, nothing was too much trouble and the waiting staff were polite friendly and accommodating. The booth we had was comfortable and the range of food we had as part of the afternoon tea was delicious and much better than the usual finger sandwiches. I particularly enjoyed the very tasty mini burger and the fried chicken morsel with sweet chilli sauce. I would very much recommend Mal Maison bar and grill and for the price we got it for (on offer 2 for 1 deal) it was a steal! I would definitely go back and do this again. Thank you for helping two of us celebrate our birthdays in style!

I had a fantastic stay at Malmaison! When I arrived, the staff was incredibly welcoming and attentive, ensuring a smooth check-in process. The room was spotless, spacious, and beautifully designed, with all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. The hotel’s location was perfect, close to the train station. Breakfast was delicious, with various options catering to all tastes. The service throughout my stay was top-notch, with staff going above and beyond to ensure everything was perfect. I highly recommend Malmaison to anyone looking for a pleasant and enjoyable experience. Can’t wait to come back!

Service was amazing. They were very attentive to my friend who has a food allergy. We got there at 6:40pm but got a train to catch at 8. They sped up the service and we were out by 7:40pm. Steaks superb, Caesar can’t be faulted, and chips to die for.

When I go it's a little quieter, so I can't vouch much for the atmosphere, other than its lovely staff. They offer me the space to decompress & respectfully collect myself. I can't thank them enough, given the recent news of a passing friend.

The food was very basic .. I had the beef (more fat than meat), which came with an oversized slice of boiled cabbage, that had been thrown onto the grill for a bit of colour and some 'jus' that tasted suspiciously like bistro gravy.. no seasoning no taske, no carbs nothing else... tiny portion .. for almost 19 quid I expected a bit of flavour at least ... I was also sat in the back room by myself which was dead ... Thankfully the cocktails were nice..

Calamari was great. That represents the one star we have given. Katsu chicken burger was a dry chicken burger with a couple of teaspoons of a watery Satay sauce. Not a Katsu sauce. Although it’s on a special (£15 for a burger and 1/2 pint), it’s still a >£10 burger and should be better! The most disappointing of all was the zero service we received. We had to ask for drinks, ask to order food and then there was no staff for additional drinks and desserts so subsequently didn’t order any. We’d had enough. Surprisingly two members of staff jumped to the table with the bill when we got up to leave. We frequent the hotel with work weekly and unfortunately will not be coming back.

I wasn’t sure whether to to write this as bad reviews or not fun for companies. However if I could give no stars I would. We went for our 1 year wedding anniversary on 14th October we thought it be nice as we had been the year before and it was lovely. But no it was soooo bad the service and food was awful. Even though we showed our online reservation we were told ‘I’ll seat you but your reservation isn’t there’. Which was rude. we got and ate our starter ..at this point I said to my husband ‘isn’t it odd no one has come to ask if everything was ok’ They came and took the plates away with literally no eye contact no words just plates gone. I ordered the T bone steak rare and it arrived well done. My husband ordered medium his was also well done but he said he would deal with it. I had to flag someone down even though they had seen I was sat not eating …and I have to stress here the waiter agreed it was well done but didn’t seem to care just I’ll get another. It came and it was again well done …. Again I showed my steak and told him it’s not even medium not a tinge of pink nothing ..How can a chef not know how to cook steak rare surely that’s easier than medium or well done! he agreed it was well done however offered no replacement, just I’ll take it off the bill. My husband had finished eating I took a couple of bites but I didn’t want it. Anniversary meal ruined. Still cost us £90 for a waste of time.

This place has gone down hill since it became chez mal from Smoak. Bad points 1. After our orders were taken there was no interaction by any member of staff throughout the meal. I had to get up and go find a staff member to ask for a steak knife. No one checked in to see how our food was. After the starter it took approximately 30 mins for them to clear the table. 2. I ordered my steak Medium rare. What arrived was a well done, tougher than nails lump of cardboard. It was also cold as if it had been left on the serving counter for a good 10 mins before being brought to the table. Given how long we had been waiting for food and there wasn’t a staff member in sight I decided to not complain as I really didn’t want to wait another 45-60 mins for another one. 3. A couple were seated at a table next to us as we were eating our mains and seemed to have constant service. A woman kept coming to their table every 5 mins to check on them but not once thought to ask why I wasn’t eating my steak and had my phone torch on it examining it from every angle. It shouldn’t matter who you are, service should be a standard for every customer. Good points 1. The nice waiter in the red waistcoat who seemed completely ran off his feet. Paid attention to us when seating us and taking our order. Unfortunately I imagine they were understaffed and he didn’t get chance to come back until the bill was being paid. Would not let us pay a gratuity because of the steak. 2. The starters of the tiger prawns and calamari were very good as usual. This is my second time here since it became Chez Mal and both times have been rather disappointing. Probably will not be making a third trip.
