Tuesday 9th December 2025 This is a old pub with a middle class working following which has 4 Holts hand pulled ales on tonight the bar staff polite and helpfull The downstairs drinking areas a comfortable place to drink in did not go upstairs so I could not comment on the upstairs drinking area. I was well impressed with this Manchester real ale pub on my visit tonight

What a warm, welcoming, wonderful place to be! Passionate people (who remember, what you ordered the other day ;-) ), fabulous, fresh food and, most importantly: Genuine draught beer for all tastes. Trailblazer Stout was my fave. Definitely, not maybe worth a visit. Or two. Or three.

A well deserved new entry into the 2026 Good Beer Guide judging from the quality of the Holts Bitter I’ve just had.

This British pub is a fantastic and well-liked establishment that offers an extensive selection of beer and delectable cuisine. The staff is exceptionally friendly and accommodating. Even when the pub was at full capacity, we were warmly received as a group of ten, and the attentive staff promptly arranged a table for us. They provided us with exceptional service and served us with delicious pub food and drinks that were nothing short of outstanding. We had an outstanding experience and would strongly recommend this pub to anyone seeking a wonderful genuine British dining and drinking experience.

Rather nice traditional pub in downtown Manchester (a short walk from Piccadilly Gardens), owned by Joseph Holt brewery. Unsurprisingly, they offer a nice selection of their cask ales - admittedly not quite the best in Britain - plus guest beers. The robust barmaid was friendly enough. It's not a huge place and can get very busy even outside of peak hours. Unfortunately my first choice, Joseph Holt "SIXEX", had gone bad, with a distinctly vinegary taste and smell. It can happen (casks, once opened, are good for only three days), but it certainly shouldn't happen if the beer is from the brewery that owns the place! Also, while the barmaid agreed with my complaint and immediately offered a replacement, she didn't take the bad beer off the bar afterwards, waiting for a new customer to be disappointed. That shouldn't happen AT ALL.

I love the Old Monkey and Martin and I often meet here for a crawl. Excellent Joe Holts pub with great real ale. Always liked Holts " fighting" bitter. Toilets down in the basement and another room upstair I believe. ( never gone up!) Good value pub that serves good pub food as well.

Had an ale here and dang it was so flat and tasted like water. I thought the English made fun of American beer for being close to water but this is evidence that English ales aren't much better at all
