Cracking little boozer, it is cosy inside, with a real fire in the autumn/winter months, pool table, darts and views overlooking the ECML at the back of the pub. Looking forward to going back next time in York! A true little gem! Plus the land lady and bar staff are top!

Authentic. A traditional English pub with a βno devicesβ policy that they take seriously in a friendly manner. Actually it is quite a nice place: snooker, darts, friendly people, outdoor garden seats, and real coal fires in the fireplace when it is cold enough. A Sam Smith Brewery pub that has some really excellent beer, ale and ciders. I think my favorite thing was the the pub was split into two separate rooms one being more lively and the other more sedate (I like them both!)

So it's been a while since I went to visit this pub and I felt compelled to alter my initial review of 5 stars. The reason... I was told that I couldn't use my cell phone. Now I'm all for trying to get people to socialise in a public setting, and I agree that cell phones are killing "bar talk", but there was no one in this pub but the bartender and a man clearly enjoying being alone. I did ask the bartender to join me but she refused. So I told her rather than stare at the ceiling I was going to use my phone. I was told that I could not. It is January 2025. Surely that bartender (who's not at fault - just doing her job) should have the ability to make a decision that perhaps incorporates a little commonsense. If a pub is empty don't ask someone to sit bored by themselves and drink like some alcoholic. Use your judgement and allow them the decency to enjoy a drink and whatever form of relaxation they enjoy. Be it music thru earbuds, news feeds, etc. Maybe having a "conversation" with their friends who don't happen to be able to join them at the pub. So if you get to this pub to socialise and there's no one to speak with, don't bother hanging around. Walk around the corner to The Bay Horse and either socialise with their people who probably will be more open to it, or feel free to use your cell phone. They aren't interested in social reformation. What a glorious little spot. You gotta love a place that, when asked "What gin do you have?" The answer is "Well I have a lovely raspberry, and I have.... Gin." So British! Between the pleasant seating areas inside, the really cozy beer garden (really just the front yard beautifully landscaped), the hand written directions to the bathrooms, and the incredibly friendly reception I received from the owner/manager/bar tender I cannot think of a better way to relax on a Sunday afternoon. Do yourself a favor, go get a raspberry gin or a Gin (they've got beer and wine as well) and relax away your troubles in this hidden gem on the outskirts of York. Just lovely!

The Crystal Palace is a traditional sam smiths pub, so it only sells sam smiths beers. It's a nice cosy two roomed pub with a pool table in the bar. I like the bitter, and they do some nice bottled beers. There is a nice beer garden at the front of the pub. The staff are very friendly, but as it's a sam smiths pub mobile phones, laptops, swearing, music and dogs are banned which give sam smiths pubs a strange atmosphere. Dogs are allowed in the garden.

Can't use your mobile phone but can pay for your drinks with it. Make your mind up. If you can't use your phones all transactions should be cash

Great local Sam Smith's pub slightly off the beaten path in York but still close enough to city centre to make an easy visit. No mobiles but you won't need it if it just say hello at the bar to someone. Wish I spent more time in york to drink here!

Not exactly a hidden gem as on the main road, but discard your mobile phone and payment card and step back into the glorious past of England's pub heritage. Lovely pint of Old Brewery Bitter at good price; only failing is they don't serve sandwiches or pie and peas - crisps etc only. Cash only.
