Visited without booking on early Thursday evening for meal. There were a few customers in but, thankfully, a few tables were available. Very pleasant and attentive staff. I had steak and ale pie, which was very good. My wife was very happy with the Mango chicken on the gluten free menu. Would happily recommend and visit again.

A great British pub. The food was delicious, especially the apple crumble and sticky toffee pudding with custard. The wine was good too. It was quiet and had a nice atmosphere. Would definitely go again when we're in the area.

We have eaten at the Red Lion quite a few times and we do not live close by and travel approximately 20 miles to visit and eat. I cannot express how disappointed I really feel this time. I ordered Lasagna, husband ordered open flatbread streak and blue cheese. Both dishes came and straight away the lasagna didnt look like it was cooked, it was not steaming and looked anaemic. It was smothered in cheese which was okay but it was not even browned in the slightest on top, even though lasagna is supposed to be oven baked and browned. It was very obvious it had been taken out of the cooler/freezer, raw basic tomato passata poured around the outside and cheese thrown on top and microwaved. Cutting into the lasagna it was cold in the middle. It didnt taste very nice either. There were huge slivers of onions and hardly any meat. I alerted one of the staff and they took the food away and returned within less than 3 minutes... same dish just microwaved for an extra minute. When you are paying for traditional pub food you certainly do not expect microwaved food, especially not a dish that should be oven cooked. Needless to say I didn't eat the dish, I have never tasted a lasagna as rubbish if I am honest - the sauce was genuinely just passata that had been proud into it, cheap passata at that with not much taste the cheese was a heart attack waiting to happen amount (which is fine if cooked properly) that basically had been melted in the microwave. When the landlord came asked if all was okay, I told him it wasn't very nice and he said, 'well you have already said it was cold and asked for it reheating'.. how rude.. no I didn't it was taken and reheated.. there was no option given.. He then stated that the lasagna's seemed ok last night, he served loads.. this just made me think the food was old and from the night before. I was gobsmacked to be honest at the rudeness, the attitude and lack of customer service. The landlord told us initially that he would only charge us for a small lasagna because I had eaten the sides. I said to my husband that was not really good enough and I felt he was being not very nice to us. He then came back to us and said he was only going to charge us for the chips on the plate because I had eaten them... all 8 of them.. I have to say we were charged for a full portion of chips but did not receive a full portion. Penny pinching comes before serving good quality food clearly. Needless to say I did not eat the lasagna and I felt very disappointed with his attitude towards us. I would like to say the girls on the shop floor looked genuinely upset and concerned. Both kept apologising (they obviously knew it was not acceptable) Its just a shame that the landlord does not feel customer service is a necessary skill to possess. So we had traveled 20 miles plus to visit to come away hungry, out of pocket and disheartened. Apart from have a full scale argument with the landlord there was nothing we could do but to pay the bill. It would have also been very unfair on the funeral party that was in there to have an argument with him too. We will not be returning. I work locally near to Shadwell. I work in a very busy environment with many work colleagues. I will be sharing my experience and I will not be recommending the Red Lion to my work colleagues, friends or family. Such a shame, I feel quite gutted, I feel even more gutted that the landlord didn't really give a monkeys that he had lost a returning customer...

The best pie and chips you'll ever have - it's life-changing. Staff are really friendly too, beer is tasty and there's a lovely community atmosphere

Had a nice time here as a rest point on our walk. I ordered gammon egg and pineapple, it was nice but the meat portion was too big and the gammon was insanely salty, needed soaking. The chips were lovely chip shop style. My partner ordered steak and chips and the steak wasn’t the best but okay, the peppercorn sauce was not good. Ordered side veggies and they were over cooked. Overall had a nice time.

Lovely quaint pub, food was delicious and staff was kind. Love meeting family here and having a good old matter! I like the choice of being able to buy a small portion or a larger portion, dessert are delicious too. Reasonable prices I will be returning.
