As I write this I realise I didn't take any pictures of the shop but take my word for it, this is a a great little gift shop and more just off the main square. They have unusual furniture, home furnishings and gifts. As a visitor to Hebden Bridge it was impractical to buy more than we did, bu we could have. It's worth a visit! I've added some more pictures of Hebden, this time of the waterways. We'll be back!

I’ve been shopping in The Barn for a number of years, bought lamps, picture frames, candles etc but never, ever again. Called in today with my grandson who has just turned 2 and he was drawn to lots of paper Christmas decorations, displayed just at the right height for little ones. Being a toddler who loves bright things he touched one of the paper Christmas decorations and tried to take it. I explained to him ‘no you mustn’t touch’ and he (as two year olds, time immemorial do) wasn’t very happy. Whilst this was happening the tall man who owns the shop was stood behind the till muttering under his breath with his face was pulled in utter contempt. This wasn’t a major incident, just a determined toddler who was a little tired and it was over with in a flash. As I find people who mutter under their breath very rude, (which he continued to do) I asked the owner what he was saying and with his face still pulled he said ‘you’ve not got much control over “that one”, pointing down at our lovely grandson like he was something he’d trodden in. I explained that he’s 2 and he seemed to disbelieve me, saying (still with the pulled face) well he’s big for his age. I agreed and told him it’s difficult to “control” 2 year olds and when he’s old enough he will understand better. Before leaving I told him that I shop there quite frequently (I have done so because I like to support local businesses, despite being able to find the exact same items cheaper on the internet) and I told him that I won’t be doing again. He said “that’s fine, there are very expensive things in this shop”. I pointed out that he had touched with his finger a paper decoration, what a huge, disproportionate over reaction this was. It’s also not Sothebys. I, alongside my family and friends will never darken the doors of this shop again. I have no doubt that this won’t be any skin off his nose, but I feel compelled to write this review, I was upset and genuinely shocked at what a truly intolerant, judgemental and frankly unkind man this is. If he’s so concerned about children touching he should put shiny bright things that are attractive to toddlers higher up and not right at their eye level. He also needs a course in customer service and a lesson in tolerance and kindness. If you have children, give this place a wide berth. If you have grandchildren, do the same. They aren’t welcome and neither are you if they are on a shopping trip with you.

Wow .. what an amazing find in Hebden Bridge. A fabulous shop selling so many gorgeous and unusual gift and home items. I spent too much and I'll be back to spend more on our next little trip to Hebden but now they have a website I suspect I'll be spending on there too! :)
