Great little arts cinema keeping the flag flying for independent cinemas in Birmingham after the closure of the Electric. Nice little bar and decent screen, sound and seating in Screen 1 (by independent cinema standards). Will definitely be coming back. Friend liked it too.
How wonderful to experience such a tiny, immersive venue brimming with personality and boasting a programme as unique as itself. We watched the Solve Along Murder, She Wrote. Not only did we have an awesome time being entertained in such a traditional way: humour, surprises and great engagement, we left feeling like we’d learned so much too, tales of actors, techniques and plot lines. Now I can’t stop watching MSW on tv! Honestly, check out their programme if you are in the area, there’s sure to be something memorable.
We hired the Mockingbird for a private screening of a short film we'd made - we received excellent service leading up to the event and also on the night. Lee and his team are friendly and thorough in what they do and the venue is prefect for intimate screenings, they also host events, as well as being a local cinema where you can see some less obvious choices.
Do they have super comfy sofa-style seats? No. Are there huuuuuuge screens here? Also no. Will the sound system rattle the fillings out of your teeth and cause you to prolapse? Still no. But they have something unique. Personality, charm and friendliness. Visiting the Mockingbird feels like movie night at a friend's place. Small, intimate (what kind of friends are we talking about here???), and super cosy. The staff are lovely, the atmosphere in the adjacent bar is wonderful and the prices are sensible. They have theme nights, wine nights and FREE NIGHTS too. Stop visiting overpriced and over-commercial big cinema chains and support your local movie house. Trust me, it's worth it. Hmmm, come to think of it, the lack of filling-loss and/or prolapsing is a grand thing. Another bonus.
TLDR: good venue, good prices, good films. Great little cinema showing wide variety of films and events (such as movie marathons, late night screenings, and themed events) at very good prices. Friendly and relaxed staff. Comfy little lobby although it can get a little crowded in winter as people are less likely to sit outside. Wide range of hot and cold drinks - including local beers - and snacks for such a small venue. Often a small, fun selection of cocktails. Always a good time in the big screen, and screen 2 was great and very comfy when a friend hired it for a private screening for a birthday party. They have since updated the screen 2 seating as well (pictured). Recycling facilities are available in the corridors. Screen 2 and the lobby are all level access. I think screen 1 is level access but access to the toilets is down steps unless you go through screen 1 (I may be mistaken - please contact the venue if you need to check). The place is a bit of a rabbit warren but the signage is very good.
Booked to see the twilight marathon (but I've been many times previously)! Staff are lovely, friendly and welcoming. Always great film choices, VERY reasonably priced. Independent so brilliant value in a lovely area and venue. I have a membership which is also great value. Have booked for the next twilight marathon too!
Lee and the Team are all amazing! We hosted a charity event here recently and the team all went above and beyond for us. Professional, welcoming and so friendly! We looked at all the main cinemas but the mockingbird really stood out and we knew they wanted to help for such a good cause! Huge thank you! All the kids and the families loved it and so did we! Definitely a cinema worth a visit!
Absolutley fantastic cinema. We attended the big buffy meet-up - the attention to detail was insane from high school maps, band posters and special messages from the cast. Quiz was fab and the magician really entertaining tarot card reading was a nice touch and loved the themed cocktails. really friendly atmosphere and will be attending future themed events!
Always enjoy a visit to the Mockingbird from usual screenings to Mystery Horror film which are a wonderful idea. I just took part in my first special event (Big Buffy Meet Up) which was fantastic. Very well organised, lots of attention to detail and selection on themed drinks and activities. Loved the activity set on each seat. A really great night !
Attended a Twilight marathon on 12/11/22. Great location, helpful and lovely staff, clean screening room and facilities such as food and toilets available on site. The timing of each film was perfect and the day ran without a hitch. I had the best time and I’ll be coming back for the next one, as well as trying to see more films here- thank you so much for being wonderful hosts, Mockingbird, can’t wait to see you guys again soon!!
