We dropped into this great shop earlier today for wall fixings and drill bits etc. Not sure what we needed, but Steve was great. He took the time to explain and sourced exactly what we needed. This is a great place with knowledgeable and helpful staff. We came up from Wapping as a result of a recommendation and were delighted. No clueless teenagers, or disinterested shelf-stackers to rely on. Elson's is our new favourite DIY place - proper old fashioned help and service.

Went there to buy two pieces of 12mm plasterboard. They cut two pieces 60x120 cm for Β£5 each, no problem, I know I could have almost full sheet for that money but I appreciate they are selling to lots of non- tradesmen that, like me on that day, needed just a small piece to patch up a ceiling. However, I am not okay to have those pieces cut with an axe, and especially it wasn't okay to try to persuade me that a completely broken piece with some wet/mouldy areas is something I should pay for! When I complained about that particular piece, one of the guys working there said to me that it is " what you get for that kind of money"! I couldn't have believed when he said that, and after I protested he repeated again that I am not going to get a new piece. I asked for my money back, and then another guy said that I will get a replacement for the damaged plasterboard piece. I have been in trade for 15 years and this has never happened before, anywhere! That guy shouldn't be working there, at all.

Big thanks to the guys at E D Elson Builders Merchants on Essex Road. I was greeted with a smile and asked how I could be helped. They recommended a the type of filler for the job in hand and even explained how best to feather in the ceiling I had stripped and had to patch. He actually showed me how to do it which is a lot more than can be said for the 'London Decorators Merchants' a few doors down who when asked, didn't have a clue. I'll definitely be returning to E D Elson.

I've just been into Elson's for a few things as am doing a DIY job and as usual the service was really good and helpful. If you have to wait it's well worth it as once you get served the guys know what they're doing. But it helps if you can take in an example of what you want or can show them a photo on your mobile.

The most wonderful hardware shop in London. Nothing they canβt find, take endless trouble to resolve the most simple of problems. Always helpful and amusing! As an elderly female customer I really appreciate this. (Iβm writing this on behalf of my friend Lunita Williams).

After visiting both Homebase and Wicks trying to buy either planks or MDF cut to a shelf size without help or success I was hugely relieved to find a review of a local supplier that sounded as though I could get what I needed and that the staff would be helpful and friendly. And that is exactly what I found! Great staff, great help and I was able to purchase exactly what I needed. Would recommend this local gem to all.

Iβm a bespoke resin artist based in Islington and I always purchase my Moisture Resistant MDF from Elsons in Essex Road. I usually purchase a whole board (244x122 cm) which they kindly cut into the sizes I want. The blokes in the shop are friendly and extremely helpful. Sometimes they have to be really patient with me if Iβve worked out the cuts I need doing incorrectly. They are always fantastic and smiling and Iβll definitely keep coming back. Iβve also posted my art on Instagram and given them a mention on there too.

Brilliant service (& thoughtful, helpful advice) from incredibly lovely & friendly staff. They talked me through sensible ways to approach my project, and carried the heavy wood to my car for me. I wish I could do ALL my shopping at Elsons. Great shop. Thank you!
