Decided to pull the trigger on a Custom Stock CS500 for my HW97K. Nothing against the factory stock, but I prefer walnut over beech. My first rifle purchase was a right-handed TX2OO MK3 in walnut, and the stock is good. Beech generally has a very uniform grain pattern. Nothing really stands out to be fair. Even before the final process, beech is too shiny for me. Generally, denser hardwoods have this look early on with woodworking processes. My walnut stocks have had a couple of coats of oil but not by me, how they arrived. I believe that you can request no oiling. Just ask for this in the notes box when selecting on the website. I've read that Danish oil is used but saw no reference to this on the website, but I could be wrong! I opted for the heartwood selection option, where a trained eye selects a blank that's heartwood rather than the lighter sapwood, usually a darker and richer look, with a chance of better grain figuring and a more noticeable contrast. To be honest, this is just an option available, and it's up to you. Regardless, I've never seen a bad stock from Custom Stock Ltd. The stock I received is superbly finished, smooth with lustre but not too shiny. I personally prefer a satin finish to a glossy one, and can easily be worked for personal preference (I should imagine that an unoiled stock would be suitable if you have a liking to a particular oil/ finishing process). It's just over a 4-week wait, but it's totally worth the pain. It's outstanding value for money given the end result and finish, as stocks are not cheap. Well packed into a double box (outer box stapled on one side). Delivery by FedEx/ Interparcel. Delivered exactly when stated. Great customer service, you'll get answers to queries, but please allow some time for them to respond if you email, as the staff number is low and the majority are on the processing floor, also when you place your order, you should get an acknowledgement email confirming that your order has been applied to orders on their system. Email will show order number and order details such as stock variant selection, manufacturer model selection, orientation, recoil pad option, wood selection, Rosewood capped pistol grip with 'white' wood spacer and finishing choices such as schnabel forend nose, stippling or checkering. If you don't receive an acknowledgement email in your inbox, check spam, as it will be instant. If you don't receive an email, call, but be patient, though. After the email is received, you won't hear from them (unless there's a query). This is normal and you can view the process from start to finish in the 'Contact Us' section of the website, FAQ'S section recommended since your spending a lot of money and there's a long wait involved. Had a CS800 for 30 odd years on my Hw77 so ordered another for my ProSport. Screw holes don't line up on the right side and the under lever slot is shoddy. Won't be ordering for my hw95
Superb company. Paul was very helpful when I called there to select a new stock for my HW80 .20 that I was customising. He showed me around the factory explaining the process from a raw plank of Walnut to the finished product. I am absolutely delighted with the stock that I bought and I cannot recommend Custom Stock highly enough.
