Magical place that was one of the inspirations for Tolkiens old forest. Absolutely breathtaking little piece of nature in the middle of a big city.
Went here for a nature walk in the summer while visiting Birmingham. For a relatively small wooded area, there is, surprisingly, a lot to see. I highly recommend this park for nature lovers. I went alone, but I wish my son was there with me. He would have loved it
Moseley Bog offers a welcome escape into nature within the bustling city of Birmingham. This local nature reserve, once the childhood playground of J.R.R. Its diverse landscape of wet and dry woodland, interspersed with patches of fen vegetation, creates a rich habitat for various wildlife, though patient observation is key to spotting them. The winding paths, some wooden boardwalks and others earthy trails, invite leisurely exploration. Ancient, gnarled trees stand sentinel, their twisted forms adding to the bog's unique character. While the "bog" element might suggest a muddy trek, the maintained paths make it largely accessible for most fitness levels, even accommodating buggies in some areas. However, don't expect manicured gardens; Moseley Bog is a wilder, more untamed space, which is precisely its charm. The air is fresh, and the sounds of nature – birdsong and rustling leaves – provide a soothing backdrop. It's a place for quiet contemplation and a refreshing connection with the natural world, a hidden gem offering a peaceful retreat from urban life. Just be sure to wear appropriate footwear, especially after rain.
Been here many times over the years but came today as part of a nature themed walk. There is a small car park at the main entrance with bike racks just further in the site. Such a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year to be absorbed in the natural beauty. Vast range of trees, plants and birds. There is a map of the site at the entrance to help plan your walk and identify places of interest. You need to wear sensible shoes as sections of the paths are muddy, especially after rainfall. Great place to bring children as it really is a wild playground for them. Those in wheelchairs will find parts of the site difficult to access. No toilets here.
Went as part of an archaeological walk organised by the Friends of Moseley Bog. Fascinating place, from the burnt mounds to the mill pond, the remains of greenhouses and clay pits. We'll organised, well maintained and well used.
Nice park for jogging, walking, taking photos and even short picnics I guess. It needs some facilities like toilet though.
A must see for all Tolkien fans, you definitely feel in middle earth. Very quiet and calming
A picturesque walk through the legendary Moseley Bog upon which Tolkien is believed to have based his famous realm, Middle-Earth. Its a beautiful little gem of Birmingham which you and any children in your family will enjoy exploring. It contains walking paths, trees, swamps, bogs and trickles of water and streams here and there. As I often say... "NOT ALL THOSE WHO WANDER ARE LOST."
A lovely place for a walk. There are wooden walk ways over the wetter places. It is ajoined by Joy's Wood. This area is where Tolkien spent time as a child and is reported to be the inspiration for Big Wood featured in his writings.
