I am a Black woman living with sickle cell disease, and I have been using this pharmacy for over 40 years without issue until now. To be clear, I’ve never had a problem here. I’ve collected my pain medication from this pharmacy for years, including just a few weeks ago. I’ve always been treated respectfully until this recent incident, which left me feeling humiliated, profiled, and deeply let down by a place I trusted. I attended to collect my regular, prescribed pain relief for a sickle cell crisis. When I gave my name, the female pharmacist who identified herself as the owner’s daughter abruptly demanded ID in a tone that was sharp, cold, and confrontational. I calmly explained that I’ve been coming here for years and have never been asked for ID. I had even called earlier that day to confirm my prescription was ready ,no one informed me there was a new pharmacist on duty or that ID would be required. There was no communication, no consideration, no attempt to make me feel seen or respected as a long-standing patient. She responded by asserting, “Well, I’m the pharmacist today,” and “This is my dad’s pharmacy.” It quickly became clear this was less about following protocol and more about asserting control. As we spoke, she remained behind the counter, waving my medication in her hand, telling me, “You’re not having your medication,” and stating she was calling the police. Meanwhile, other customers were being served without being asked for ID it was only me who was singled out in this way. I want to be fully transparent: I was in pain, I was frustrated, and I raised my voice. I was unwell and desperate for relief. This was the first time I’ve ever come out of character in that pharmacy, because I felt I was being treated as a threat instead of a patient. I reached forward to take the medication “which was in her hand “and she escalated the situation by calling the police and claiming I had attacked her and hurt her finger. That accusation was not only false but deeply damaging. Let me be clear: there is a huge difference between reaching for your prescribed medication and physically attacking someone. I did not attack anyone. I was a patient in pain trying to access my medication, which was being withheld in a confrontational and power-driven manner. The two other staff members, who know me well, stood by silently. They did not intervene, explain to the pharmacist who I was, or try to de-escalate the situation. Their silence spoke volumes. Even my 15-year-old daughter has collected this same medication in the past and has never been asked for ID. This was not about policy. I understand that controlled drugs require care and protocol. The issue was not what was said, but how it was said the tone, the behaviour, and the complete lack of empathy. I was made to feel like a criminal not a patient. The pharmacist’s behaviour reflected racial profiling, indirect discrimination, and an abuse of power. Her actions and language leaned heavily into dangerous stereotypes about Black women being “aggressive” or “threatening” when asserting their rights. Eventually, I did receive my medication, but only after being demeaned, disrespected, and falsely accused. I have now transferred to another pharmacy and will be submitting formal complaints to NHS England, the General Pharmaceutical Council, and any relevant regulatory body. This experience has left a lasting impact. I’ve been attending this pharmacy for over four decades. I’ve never caused any issues. But today, I was treated like a problem. This review is not just for me ,it’s for every patient, especially those living with long-term conditions, who deserve to be treated with dignity. It’s for every Black woman who has been silenced, stereotyped, or escalated against just for speaking up. We deserve care. We deserve fairness. We deserve respect every time.

Amazing pharmacy with excellent customer service. The team took time to explain my medication to me, how to use it and made the whole process seamless (unlike Boots). Highly recommend supporting them, great local business!

Racism to the max! I've never been treated worse in over 20 years in the UK. Disgusting behaviour! Edit in response to the owner's response - the review was not posted the day of the incident, but a few days after. The gent in question was a young gent attending the counter

Always had fantastic service in this pharmacy. Usually when you go to one of the other big 'chains' you have to wait 10-20 minutes for a prescription even when there's no-one else around, but in Mansons I've never had to wait at all - hand prescription over, the staff go and get it and you're done. Won't ever be going anywhere else!
