I’m writing to raise a concern about an experience I had at your café on 28th october 2025 I was there in my role as a support worker, accompanying and assisting a service user who uses a wheelchair. The service user was eating a meal purchased from your café, and I was sitting with them to provide the support they needed to eat. During our visit, a member of staff came over and told me off for eating my own food. I completely understand that cafés have a “no outside food or drink” policy, but in this case it was clearly obvious that I was there in a professional capacity, not just as another customer. Support workers often work 8–9 hour shifts without a single break, as we must stay with the people we support to ensure their safety and comfort. The only time we can eat is usually while the person we support is eating. On this occasion, I had about a two-minute window to quickly eat something while staying with my service user, and it was during that short moment that a staff member came up to tell me off. This was not only uncomfortable for me, but also unfair on the service user, who is now reluctant to return to your café because of how the situation was handled. They rely on accessible venues like yours, and experiences like this can make it harder for them to enjoy something as simple as having a meal out. What makes this especially disappointing is that in Motherwell, even big companies like McDonald’s, Subway, KFC, Greggs, and Costa have all been extremely accommodating and understanding. As a result, we’ve built great relationships with the staff in those places — they recognise us, welcome us warmly, and appreciate the work we do. I would have expected your café to show the same understanding and not take such an old-fashioned approach. I had hoped your café would be more progressive and inclusive, especially given that I was there to support the person so they could access and enjoy your service. I hope you’ll take this feedback on board and encourage your team to show a little more empathy and flexibility in future. A small amount of awareness and kindness can make a huge difference for both the people we support and those of us providing care.
